When Capt. Mark Bailey retired in 2021 after 30 years in the Navy, he soon realized something was off with his retiree pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was too high, so the pilot sent a letter to the Defense Finance Accounting Service, which oversees all of the military\u2019s active duty and retired pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To his surprise, a DFAS official called him and assured him that his retiree pay was correct, based on the information the Navy provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this spring, like more than 1,200 other Navy retirees<\/a>, Bailey has been told the Navy did, in fact, miscalculate his retirement pay, and he could need to return that overpayment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving spent 30 years in the Navy, it\u2019s not surprising to me. This is a significant administrative error,\u201d the 55-year-old father of three said. \u201cI\u2019m sure DFAS is looking at the Navy like, what the hell did you do to us? It\u2019s a Navy mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
