Tim Hawkins said in a statement. \u201cAssisted by tug boats, Alan Shepard maneuvered under its own power the following morning at high tide and is safely moored pierside in Bahrain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/01\/31\/officials-navy-cruiser-ran-aground-near-japan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cruiser-antietam.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Officials: Navy cruiser ran aground near Japan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The cruiser Antietam ran aground Tuesday while off the coast of Yokosuka, Japan, according to two Navy officials familiar with the incident.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No personnel sustained injuries, and there was no operational impact, Hawkins said. The vessel\u2019s crew is made up of more than 80 civilian mariners, but it\u2019s unclear how many were aboard at the time of the mishap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Alan Shepard launched in 2006 and is named after the first American to enter space: the late astronaut and Rear Adm. Alan Shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/08\/24\/pacific-fleets-sloppy-seamanship-manifested-in-antietams-january-grounding\/#:~:text=The%20Antietam%20ran%20aground%20at,grounding%2C%20according%20to%20the%20report.\" target=\"_blank\">guided-missile cruiser Antietam<\/a> ran aground off the coast of Japan near Yokosuka Naval Base after anchoring out due to high winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That mishap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/01\/31\/officials-navy-cruiser-ran-aground-near-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\">which an investigation determined was preventable<\/a>, resulted in $4.2 million in repairs and 1,100 gallons of oil spilling into the bay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No personnel
