{"id":47463,"date":"2018-05-29T21:48:37","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T21:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/29\/these-four-military-dogs-just-received-the-nations-highest-honor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:21:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:21:58","slug":"these-four-military-dogs-just-received-the-nations-highest-honor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/05\/29\/these-four-military-dogs-just-received-the-nations-highest-honor\/","title":{"rendered":"These four military dogs just received the nation\u2019s highest honor"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=12935ffd-45b5-43db-aec9-a8bb4d852cdf\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-12935ffd-45b5-43db-aec9-a8bb4d852cdf.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">These four veterans have very special tales.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four veterans were honored with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/10\/12\/five-military-dogs-receive-medal-of-courage\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Medal of Courage<\/a> awards on Capitol Hill on May 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn\u2019t give any speeches, but not just because they were humble \u2014 the four vets are retired military working dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2014\/07\/24\/military-working-dogs-finding-their-way-home\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">American Humane<\/a> Lois Pope K-9 Medal of Courage is the highest honor for military dogs that displayed extraordinary valor and service to their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese remarkable dogs have given us their best,\u201d veterans advocate Lois Pope said at the ceremony. \u201cThey have put their own lives on the line to protect us, to defend us, and to save us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four recipients were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jag, a 12-year-old Labrador retriever who served with the Army for seven years.<\/li><li>Taba, a 9-year-old Dutch shepherd who served as an Army Special Forces multipurpose canine.<br><\/li><li>Summer, a 7-year-old Labrador retriever who served in Afghanistan and is now a member of a TSA K-9 team for the Amtrak Police Department in Washington, D.C.<br><\/li><li>Taker, a 12-year-old Labrador retriever who served with the Marine Corps in Iraq and Afghanistan.<span class=\"js-paste-end-UVW7X3RARFD65ALKPNGUD2BPIM\"> <br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Group-Photo-3-1.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Group-Photo-3-1.jpg.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Group-Photo-3-1.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Group-Photo-3-1.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Army veteran Dennis Dow with Jag, from left, Marine veteran Kevin Zuniga with Taker, Air Force veteran Micah Jones with Summer and Taba, who was adopted by a former K-9 police dog handler and his family. (American Humane)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine veteran Kevin Zuniga deployed with Taker to Afghanistan with 1st Tank Battalion out of Twentynine Palms, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe met a few months before we deployed because they were asking for volunteers to be dog handlers,\u201d Zuniga told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2017\/10\/12\/five-military-dogs-receive-medal-of-courage\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3699990.jpg_ee0af1.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Five military dogs receive Medal of Courage<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The dogs were awarded medals for serving with distinction in Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, the Marine wasn\u2019t selected at first, but when someone had to drop out, Zuniga took the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was meant to be, I guess,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zuniga and Taker conducted route clearing in Afghanistan for seven months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dogs and their handlers remained in the trucks until the dogs were needed to clear a checkpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf someone happens to walk by, it\u2019s an easy target for the enemy,\u201d he said. \u201cBut dogs are lower to the ground, faster to run around and a lot lighter so they wouldn\u2019t trigger any explosives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sgt.-Taker-4.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sgt.-Taker-4.jpg.jpg 900w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sgt.-Taker-4.jpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Sgt.-Taker-4.jpg.jpg?resize=768,576 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sgt. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taker was also a morale booster for the deployed troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey could pet him and play with him and kind of forget about what we\u2019re doing over there a little bit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the pair returned from deployment, Zuniga had to give Taker back to the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI still had two years left with the Marines, so I didn\u2019t see him for two years,\u201d Zuniga said. \u201cIn 2012, I was discharged, and it just so happened that he was getting discharged as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After doing some research and connecting with someone who knew where Taker was, Zuniga was able to adopt the dog he served with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s been with us since the end of 2012,\u201d Zuniga said. \u201cWe picked him up at the airport, and he still recognized me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zuniga said he was surprised and happy when he found out his four-legged companion was picked for the Medal of Courage award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen the competition from previous years,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m happy because he\u2019s been through a lot. He deployed with a different handler to Iraq.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine said military dogs aren\u2019t always recognized as much as their human counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re just seen as tools sometimes,\u201d he said. \u201cIt shines some light toward the topic of military dogs and makes people think about the dogs that didn\u2019t make it or back, or the people that didn\u2019t make it back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force veteran Micah Jones echoed Zuniga\u2019s sentiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the military, a lot of the handlers are the ones getting the ribbons and the medals,\u201d he said. \u201cDogs don\u2019t really get that much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Jones and Summer both served, they didn\u2019t find each other until their civilian jobs brought them together working with Amtrak police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2272\" height=\"1704\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg 2272w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg?resize=300,225 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg?resize=768,576 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg?resize=1024,768 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg?resize=1536,1152 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_3884.JPG.jpg?resize=2048,1536 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2272px) 100vw, 2272px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Then-Army Sergeant Dennis Dow relaxes with Sgt. (Courtesy photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former security forces airman met Summer in 2014 after Jones\u2019 previous canine partner retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s a burst of energy,\u201d he said. \u201cI checked her vet records, and that\u2019s when I learned she was over in Kandahar, [Afghanistan].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones made contact with Summer\u2019s previous handler and found out she served with Marines conducting routine patrols, clearing routes, finding weapon caches and even coming under fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMe being a veteran, and learning about her being a war dog and military veteran as well, it was an honor,\u201d he said of being paired with Summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wears her Afghanistan campaign ribbon and Global War on Terrorism service medal on her work harness every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want the public to know she\u2019s a war dog,\u201d Jones said. \u201cShe served her
