{"id":47878,"date":"2018-05-03T17:31:25","date_gmt":"2018-05-03T17:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/03\/us-french-troops-seen-conducting-joint-patrol-in-manbij-syria\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:54:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:54:56","slug":"us-french-troops-seen-conducting-joint-patrol-in-manbij-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/05\/03\/us-french-troops-seen-conducting-joint-patrol-in-manbij-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"US, French troops seen conducting joint patrol in Manbij, Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pictures and video surfaced Monday showing U.S. and French forces conducting a joint patrol in the northern Syria town of Manbij.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=divGCTR25-Q\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover266845\">video posted by Furat FM<\/a>, a news radio channel in the region, shows American and French flags on display as vehicles drive through what is reportedly downtown Manbij.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pentagon officials wouldn\u2019t comment directly on the footage or confirm the existence of joint patrols. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrance is a valued coalition partner whose national leadership has made clear its intent to send troops to Syria,\u201d said Marine Maj. Adrian Rankine-Galloway, a Pentagon spokesman. \u201cWe defer to French authorities to answer specific questions pertaining to its national contributions.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, France has been fairly tight-lipped about its deployment of troops to the region as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the footage, the U.S. troops are seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2015\/10\/16\/oshkosh-debuts-m-atv-6x6-at-ausa\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">Oshkosh M-ATVs<\/a> and regular Humvees, while their French counterparts appear to be driving Nexter Aravis infantry mobility vehicles. Additionally, one of the <span class=\"js-paste-start-ZCI4JTLL6ZFU7LIMORSMQWTILE\">French<span class=\"js-paste-end-ZCI4JTLL6ZFU7LIMORSMQWTILE\"> trucks is spotted with a satellite communications antenna flared out on top of the roof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the <span class=\"js-paste-start-Z7OBUX444JG75HYXE2PCN75LM4\"> Aravis <span class=\"js-paste-end-Z7OBUX444JG75HYXE2PCN75LM4\"> and Oshkosh vehicles were designed to deal with the growing threat posed by improved explosive devices and more powerful kinetic projectiles, while retaining the relatively high mobility needed for assault vehicles.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/09\/check-out-the-high-tech-mortar-system-us-forces-set-up-in-manbij\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-06-at-17.26.20.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Check out the high-tech mortar system US forces set up in Manbij<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In pictures and video that first surfaced on Kurdistan 24, a news outlet in the region, U.S. forces appear to be flexing mine-resistant vehicles, weapons assets and construction equipment to Manbij in order to reinforce two bases there.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furat FM also posted pictures of U.S. and French troops reportedly on the outskirts of Manbij after they had paused their patrol and put themselves in a security posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manbij has been a centerpiece in the Syrian conflict, with Turkish forces demanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/04\/white-house-says-syria-mission-coming-to-a-rapid-end\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover52562\">U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces<\/a> leave the area due to the existence of Kurdish fighters in the coalition. The mixed Kurdish and Arab town was liberated from the Islamic State in August 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been scattered reports from Turkish and Russian state media that the French were building military bases in the vicinity of Manbij, but no official word of confirmation has come from official channels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While U.S. officials don\u2019t talk openly about troop deployments to the tense northern Syria region, that same concern isn\u2019t shared by local Kurdish officials. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside remaining fighters are far from Manbij; however US forces needed to keep ISIS from resurging.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rezan Gilo, the joint chief of defense in Syrian Kurdistan, an area known to some as Rojava, told the regional news outlet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kurdistan24.net\/en\/news\/8f52a15e-846b-4d40-804f-bc0743a626ad\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover379917\">Kurdistan 24<\/a> that French forces were setting themselves up in the region in early April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u201cWe tell of what we see on the ground, not the statements,\u201d Gilo told Kurdistan 24, responding to reports denying the presence of those forces in the area. \u201cSometimes the NATO states deny the existence of their forces in the region to avoid any tension, but, actually, French and U.S. troops are operating on the ground in our region.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French President Emmanuel Macron previously expressed support for the continued presence of U.S. troops in northern Syria, despite President Donald Trump teasing a possible withdrawal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Trump said \u201cwe\u2019ll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon,\u201d and \u201clet the other people take care of it now,\u201d he quickly backtracked in an April 24 press conference with Macron. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump said that before American troops leave Syria, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/04\/25\/trump-backtracks-on-syria-after-talks-with-french-leader\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover948517\">we want to leave a strong and lasting footprint<\/a>.\u201d This long-term approach, he added, was \u201ca very big
