{"id":47888,"date":"2017-07-24T15:37:50","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T15:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/07\/24\/filmmaker-you-cant-praise-the-military-while-bashing-my-generation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:47:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:47:34","slug":"filmmaker-you-cant-praise-the-military-while-bashing-my-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2017\/07\/24\/filmmaker-you-cant-praise-the-military-while-bashing-my-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"Filmmaker: You can&#8217;t praise the military while bashing my generation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, film producer and Iraq War veteran Chris Roessner was honored by the Pat Tillman foundation with their annual \u201cMake Your Mark\u201d award, focused on the belief that \u201cwe should strive to be part of something bigger than ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roessner, a 2010 Tillman scholar and writer of the movie Sand Castle, used the opportunity to discuss both his outlook on life and his generation. The 33-year-old said he believes disrespect shown to millennials ignores the critical military sacrifices many have already made, and the national leadership yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are excerpts from his award acceptance speech:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to talk about us as a generation. I\u2019m of the opinion that one cannot disrespect our generation and respect the military at the same time. Those two thoughts are in opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd yet, over the years, I\u2019ve heard the same folks who extol the same sacrifices of the military assign to our generation such titles as \u2018selfish,\u2019 \u2018narcissistic,\u2019 \u2018eternally dissatisfied.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy experience has been the opposite. We are a group that has been asked to shoulder two of the longest wars in our country\u2019s history, to weather a great recession, to surmont crippling student loan debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd yet we are emerging as leaders in business, medicine, the law, the arts&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we look ahead, a new problem is emerging. What we now face is the problem of reaffirmation, reaffirmation of forgotten core values. We are a generation tasked with affirming that empathy is not weakness, and that strength only exists if it\u2019s in service of something bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/04\/21\/iraq-vet-talks-about-his-netflix-movie-pulling-cq-in-saddam-s-palace-debunking-dysfunctional-veteran-stereotype\/\"><i>Iraq vet talks about his Netflix movie, debunking \u2018dysfunctional veteran\u2019 stereotype<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must reaffirm that we are strong because we are fearlessly inclusive. Human potential is our greatest commodity, and if only some of us realize that, it\u2019s far too few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must reaffirm that we are a generation unimpressed with individual achievement and careerism. One that refuses to be fool by cynicism that masquerades as wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we must reaffirm that we have the courage to live a purpose-driven life, and that we know full well that our actions, our sacrifices, our triumphs will never be quantified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat brings me to Pat (Tillman). On Sept. 12, 2001, Pat said in an interview, \u2018As far as laying myself on the line, I haven\u2019t done a damn thing.\u2019 What I hear in that quote is dissatisfaction. He was dissatisfied in himself because he knew he could do more, and he was dissatisfied because the world around him had yet to look the way he wished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo when people say of us that we are eternally dissatisfied, I think they are absolutely right, but for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2016\/07\/31\/the-millennials-have-taken-over-a-primer-for-the-military-s-generational-shift\/\"><i>The millennials have taken over: A primer for the military\u2019s generational shift<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor those who don\u2019t know her work, Martha Graham was without a doubt the best dance choreographer the world has ever seen. She was asked in her older age to reflect upon her long and iconic life in the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe said, \u2018No artist is ever pleased. For us, there is only divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us wondering and makes us more alive than all the others.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wish for you all divine dissatisfaction, and I wish for you all blessed unrest. And in time, may they say of us, \u2018that generation was just a little more alive than all of the others.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
