OIR said Iraqi forces are \u201cincreasingly\u201d conducting independent operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday marks another milestone for the anti-ISIS international military Coalition and our Iraqi Security Forces partners,\u201d Army Brig. Gen. Vincent Barker, the OIR director of sustainment, said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Qayyarah base served as a strategic launching point for the ISF [Iraqi Security Forces] and Coalition during the Battle of Mosul. In particular, the base serves as a hub for the Iraqi air force, who continue to deliver lethal strikes on Daesh bed-down locations,&#8221; Barker said in the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2020\/03\/20\/training-in-iraq-halted-smaller-bases-consolidating-some-coalition-troops-homeward-bound-over-covid-19-concerns\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/200104-M-ZX256-1075.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Training in Iraq halted, smaller bases consolidating some coalition troops homeward bound over COVID-19 concerns<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cThe Coalition remains committed to the lasting defeat of ISIS through our partnership with the ISF, and as the situation permits, we will resume our support to Iraqi training.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coalition says it plans to continue to consolidate force from a smaller outposts throughout Iraq during 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid-March, OIR handed over a small strategic base located near the Iraq-Syria border known as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/03\/20\/us-led-coalition-troops-pull-out-of-base-in-western-iraq\/\" target=_blank> al-Qaim<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coalition is still in Iraq, but plans to operate from fewer outposts. Army Col. Myles B. Caggins III, a spokesman for OIR, tweeted Thursday that \u201c100s of training troops are departing temporarily for COVID-19 safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. military says some coalition troops will draw down in Iraq and return home as Iraqi forces have halted all training over fears of spreading COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.K. announced March 19 it was pulling some of its forces from Iraq following a suspension of training across the country over the last 60-days. The U.K. detailed in a news release that it will keep \u201ckey military\u201d service members in Iraq to carry on the anti-ISIS campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn recent months the tempo of training has significantly declined, which means that I am in a position to bring back the current training unit to the UK,\u201d British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere remains a significant footprint of UK Armed Forces within the coalition and elsewhere. We are committed to building Iraq\u2019s security capacity through our membership of the Global Coalition that has proved so effective and will continue to support the Iraqi Government in achieving stability,\u201d Wallace said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s transfer was coordinated with the Government of Iraq and is possible thanks to the efforts and successes of our ISF partners,\u201d Barker said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe Qayyarah base served as a strategic launching point for the ISF [Iraqi Security Forces] and Coalition during the Battle of Mosul.
