{"id":49164,"date":"2026-07-17T17:01:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T17:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2026\/07\/17\/dc-national-guard-gets-its-first-security-vessel\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:09:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:09:54","slug":"dc-national-guard-gets-its-first-security-vessel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2026\/07\/17\/dc-national-guard-gets-its-first-security-vessel\/","title":{"rendered":"DC National Guard gets its first security vessel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The District of Columbia National Guard has commissioned its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/4541229\/dc-national-guard-boosts-homeland-defense-with-first-maritime-security-vessel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/4541229\/dc-national-guard-boosts-homeland-defense-with-first-maritime-security-vessel\/\">first maritime security vessel<\/a> this week, giving the unit a waterborne capability to support security at major events and overall homeland defense in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessel is assigned to the 260th Special Purpose Brigade, which was created in response to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/08\/additional-measures-to-address-the-crime-emergency-in-the-district-of-columbia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/08\/additional-measures-to-address-the-crime-emergency-in-the-district-of-columbia\/\">executive order<\/a> signed by President Donald Trump in 2025 to address a \u201ccrime emergency\u201d in Washington, D.C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order called on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to establish a specialized unit within the D.C. National Guard dedicated to \u201censuring public safety and order\u201d and strengthening coordination between military forces and civilian security agencies responsible for protecting the nation\u2019s capital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new vessel expands that mission into the city\u2019s waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHomeland defense is a team sport. We\u2019re the connective tissue between military response and the agencies that secure the capital every day,\u201d Army Col. Larry Doane, commander of the 260th Special Purpose Brigade, said in a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessel was acquired through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/4541229\/dc-national-guard-boosts-homeland-defense-with-first-maritime-security-vessel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">partnership with the U.S. Navy<\/a> and is the first maritime security vessel operated by an Army unit in Washington, D.C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With protected airspace, federal buildings, overlapping jurisdictions and two major waterways, Washington presents an uncommon security environment. The vessel will support waterborne security operations during major events in the city, such as Fourth of July celebrations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen symbols of freedom are center stage, like on the Fourth of July, some bad actors might see a target.
