Manfredo Martin-Michael Madrigal III, 38, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2024\/07\/29\/former-army-lawyer-pleads-guilty-to-destroying-government-property\/\" target=\"_blank\">pled guilty in July 2024<\/a> to three counts of making false statements and one count of destroying U.S. Army materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrigal was assigned in February 2022 to work at the Judge Advocate General\u2019s Legal Center and School, known as the JAG School, where he was given a security clearance. He worked in the Training Developments Directorate, a wing tasked with creating training materials for the JAG Corps and Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While assigned to the school, he was placed under investigation for failing to report a previous DUI arrest. The federal prosecution team alleged Madrigal began to unravel then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMadrigal filmed himself on late February 6 and early February 7, 2022, accessing the JAG School\u2019s national security training module,\u201d court documents read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrigal uttered derogatory, profane remarks toward the Army during the video and deleted online JAG training materials. He then placed a two-and-a-half minute call to the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am going to teach them a lesson,\u201d he told a witness at the time. \u201cRussia has reached out to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2024\/07\/29\/former-army-lawyer-pleads-guilty-to-destroying-government-property\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635707466681973256-thinkstockphotos-76800459jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Former Army lawyer pleads guilty to destroying government property<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The former lawyer called the Russian embassy in Washington, D.C., the same night he filmed himself deleting legal training materials.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 22, 2022, Madrigal was discharged from the JAG School and falsely claimed in exit paperwork that he\u2019d never contacted a foreign national, despite having done so a few weeks prior. He repeated the same lies when he was interviewed by the FBI several months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrigal was arrested in August 2022 for cyberstalking an ex-girlfriend by accessing personal information stored in her apps, sending her threatening messages and threatening her in person while possessing a firearm, according to court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A supporting affidavit also cited false statements Madrigal had made to the FBI regarding the Russian Embassy contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was indicted in September 2023 for one count of willfully injuring U.S. property, four counts of making false statements to a U.S. agency, two counts of witness tampering and one count of cyberstalking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madrigal\u2019s defense team argued the<b> <\/b>charges against him stemmed from romantic relationships and therefore, the proceedings should be held in state court instead of federal. The defense also argued that the materials Madrigal destroyed were \u201cbenign and redundant electronic PowerPoint slides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a rebuttal, prosecutors painted Madrigal as both a national security threat and a danger to witnesses, whom he\u2019d harassed and intimidated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[I]f I wanted to kill you, I would figure out a way to figure out when you\u2019re going to be home, and I would come and kill you, if that\u2019s what I wanted to do,\u201d Madrigal said to a witness, according to court
