{"id":50001,"date":"2019-08-04T19:07:16","date_gmt":"2019-08-04T19:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/08\/04\/for-some-veterans-strangers-are-family-at-burial-services\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:07:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:07:40","slug":"for-some-veterans-strangers-are-family-at-burial-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/military-honor\/2019\/08\/04\/for-some-veterans-strangers-are-family-at-burial-services\/","title":{"rendered":"For some veterans, strangers are family at burial services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GOTHA, Fla. \u2014 There were no relatives at Vietnam veteran Stephen Jerald Spicer\u2019s funeral, but his passing didn\u2019t go unnoticed as a few dozen patriotic strangers showed up to honor his service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American flags fluttered behind a procession of motorcycles that escorted a hearse carrying Spicer&#8217;s black casket with gold trim \u2014 the Army&#8217;s signature colors \u2014 from Woodlawn Funeral Home in Gotha for 50 miles to Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spicer, 72, died June 14 and was designated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/07\/18\/hundreds-attend-funeral-for-veteran-with-no-known-relatives\/\" target=_blank>an \u201cunclaimed veteran\u201d<\/a> \u2014 someone who doesn\u2019t have a next of kin to claim their remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Longwood resident is among more than 3,000 unclaimed veterans nationwide who have been buried with full military honors through the Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans Burial Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program, which launched in 2000, was &#8220;founded upon the belief that every veteran deserves a dignified and honorable burial,&#8221; The organization provides escorts to about 800 funerals in the state each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They are our fellow brothers and sisters who put themselves in harm&#8217;s way at one time or another for the freedoms that we have today in this country that we cherish,&#8221; said Shelton, 65, who served in the Air Force for 20 years. &#8220;We let them know that they&#8217;re not alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings spoke at Spicer\u2019s service Thursday about the importance of community support for homeless veterans.
