{"id":50566,"date":"2019-01-31T16:34:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T16:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/31\/vet-entrepreneurship-program-offers-mentoring-networking-and-free-housing-too\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:18:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:18:07","slug":"vet-entrepreneurship-program-offers-mentoring-networking-and-free-housing-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2019\/01\/31\/vet-entrepreneurship-program-offers-mentoring-networking-and-free-housing-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Vet entrepreneurship program offers mentoring, networking \u2014 and free housing too?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An innovative entrepreneurship training program at New York University offers free office space, mentoring and networking opportunities to veterans, spouses and others in the military community who want help growing their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now the year-long Apex program in Brooklyn\u2019s Industry City is expanding its reach by offering free housing, too \u2014 a perk organizers hope will make it possible for entrepreneurs from all over the country to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe call it Apex because we want you to leave that program in a higher and better place than when you started,\u201d said James Hendon, director of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Veterans Future Lab, home to Apex and other veteran-specific training programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futurelabs.nyc\/programs\/apex\/\" target=_blank>Applications<\/a> are now open for the next round of Apex, which will start in July and run through the following summer. Individual participants who need housing will be able to live at nearby Army base Fort Hamilton for the year, though the benefit does not extend to family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to help veterans on a national level, and this is a way to do that,\u201d Hendon said. \u201cWe\u2019re removing the barriers to entry for someone \u2026 that wants to reach their full potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2018\/03\/22\/need-help-networking-youre-not-alone\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-828279292-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Need help networking? You\u2019re not alone<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veteran entrepreneurs know networking and having a mentor are important for business. But developing those relationships may be easier said they done, a recent study shows.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program, launched in 2017, is open to veterans, service members, military spouses and Defense Department employees. The average age of the 22 startups currently represented in the program \u2014 everything from a nonprofit to a tech company to a wedding planning business \u2014 is 18 months, and the help is tailored to new business owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps veteran Terry Kim said he\u2019s gotten critical support through the program since starting his company, Heleot, a web platform for 30-second product review videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First on his list of benefits was the space itself. Having an office eliminates the distractions of working from home and offers a \u201cbig motivation to keep working harder and harder. Having other people there, other founders, that are motivated as well and striving to do the same thing \u2014 it\u2019s a great environment to be in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s also taken advantage of the pro bono legal help from the law firm Orrick and other professional services offered to program participants. (NYU Tandon School of Engineering)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kurt Becker, Tandon\u2019s vice dean for research, innovation and entrepreneurship, said Apex grew out of a 12-week training program for veteran entrepreneurs that started in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is all it was meant to be. Much to our surprise at the end of the first program, there were four to five teams that had an idea and were ready to form a startup company,\u201d he said. \u201cThey said, \u2018What are you going to do with us? Are you going to put us on the street?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, Apex was born. Hendon, himself a veteran entrepreneur and one of the first to attend the lab\u2019s veteran-specific training, said the longer \u201cincubator\u201d program is designed to essentially make up for lost time for entrepreneurs who put their business ideas and training on pause while serving in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are certain &#8230; skills that you bring from your military service,\u201d such as discipline, integrity and a \u201cnever quit ethos\u201d, he said. \u201cAt the same time you may have lost out on things \u2014 access to the right network, \u2026 access to being a master of whatever it is that you\u2019re selling or having a subject matter expertise in that industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe exist to close that gap so that we can get you caught up in certain ways,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/03\/05\/retired-seals-company-puts-dna-in-tattoos\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC_0093-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Retired SEAL\u2019s company puts DNA in tattoos<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Boyd Renner&#039;s first tattoo honors his wife with a design inspired by her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis and a one-of-a-kind ingredient: her DNA.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the program, entrepreneurs also have access to other business development programs that are under the engineering school\u2019s Future Labs program. Hendon said between all the staff, there\u2019s a collective 100 years of entrepreneurship experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo be able to have access to this institutional memory, I think, is invaluable,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s something you won\u2019t get on your own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kim has friends who are also veterans who want to start their own businesses, but they don\u2019t live in New York and likely don\u2019t know about a program like Apex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we open up that housing, definitely it will benefit veterans and entrepreneurs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An entrepreneurship training program in New York City offers free office space, mentoring and networking opportunities to veterans, spouses and others in the military community who want help growing their businesses.
