Critics says that\u2019s an unnecessary hurdle during the COVID-19 outbreak and in an already arduous process, made more urgent with the looming withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops from the country and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/05\/17\/they-are-absolutely-going-to-kill-us-afghans-who-helped-the-us-fear-being-left-behind\/\" target=\"_blank\">the danger faced by those who helped fight the Taliban<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot allow a slow bureaucracy to cost the lives of Afghans that served alongside our men and women,\u201d said Democratic Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, a former Army Ranger who served in Afghanistan and introduced the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation drew bipartisan support, passing 366-46 as part of a combination of seven bills. It now goes to the Senate. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/24\/us-to-begin-evacuating-some-afghan-nationals-as-they-await-visa-approval\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21163517380523.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">U.S. to begin evacuating some Afghan nationals as they await visa approval<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">White House officials have not said how many individuals will be moved or where they will be housed while they await a final decision.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separate legislation will be voted on in the House as early as this week that would increase the number of special immigrant visas by 8,000 and ease some of the other requirements for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Joe Biden said last week that the administration would evacuate thousands of people who worked for the U.S. military along with their families but did not provide details, including where they would be housed while authorities review their applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. created the special immigrant visa program for Afghans in 2009.
