{"id":51566,"date":"2021-04-29T20:25:49","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T20:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/29\/veterans-group-shifts-focus-from-military-voting-to-bigger-election-reforms\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:32:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:32:17","slug":"veterans-group-shifts-focus-from-military-voting-to-bigger-election-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2021\/04\/29\/veterans-group-shifts-focus-from-military-voting-to-bigger-election-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"Veterans group shifts focus from military voting to bigger election reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group of high-profile veterans and defense leaders who last fall lobbied for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2020\/11\/04\/there-are-still-tens-of-thousands-of-military-absentee-ballots-yet-to-be-counted\/\" target=_blank>military voters\u2019 access<\/a> to the polls is now shifting their campaign to ensuring free and fair elections for all Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operation Protect Democracy, which grew out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/counteveryhero.org\/\" target=_blank>Count Every Hero Campaign<\/a> founded last year, is calling for veterans to take a key role in election reform across the country and ensuring that all eligible voters have access to ballots in federal, state and local elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizers said they were inspired to shift the message in part because of widespread misinformation about the 2020 presidential election results, and the attempted insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2020\/11\/05\/former-military-leaders-trumps-tweet-is-attack-on-our-electoral-process\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/instagram-image-from-fvap.jpg_4481b0.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Former military leaders: Trump\u2019s tweet is \u2018attack on our electoral process\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The president&#039;s role as commander in chief is also to protect service members&#039; rights, including their right to vote, former military leaders say.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact that veterans participated in that was troubling for us,\u201d said retired Marine Corps Gen. Tony Zinni, chairman of the group. \u201cAnd of late, legislation seems to be proliferating to try to restrict eligible voters in many ways and make it more difficult to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese things really prompted us to say let\u2019s keep this nonpartisan group together,\u201d said Zinni, whose final tour of duty was running U.S. Central Command from 1997 to 2000. \u201cWe honestly felt the American people would look to us to make sure that we\u2019re sending the right message, and showing that we support and defend the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group \u2014 which includes former Army Secretary Luis Caldera, former Navy Secretary Sean O\u2019Keefe, former Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James and former Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey \u2014 is planning public awareness efforts on voting rights, voting opportunities and civic literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also have pledged to work for \u201csecure elections free of foreign interference\u201d and \u201ctransparency and effective oversight of the electoral system\u201d through advocacy and lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe proved over nearly 250 years now that our way of government is intended to be self-correcting and self-healing,\u201d said retired Gen. John Jumper, former Chief of Staff of the Air Force. \u201cBut that requires confidence and requires participation by a citizenry that is well informed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although group members describe themselves as \u201ccross-partisan,\u201d the group is backing the Democratic-backed For the People Act, currently pending in Congress. The legislation has been hailed by President Joe Biden as needed reforms to the country\u2019s election processes but attacked by Republicans as a partisan \u201cpower grab\u201d by their political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jumper said the goal isn\u2019t to back any one party or plan, but to start a broader conversation on election improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are non-partisan,\u201d he said. \u201cWe formed [this group] to ensure that the military votes were counted, and in doing so we found that there were obstacles to voting. We all support the kind of legislation that enables access rather than builds obstacles to citizens rights to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information on the new
