The downing of the jetliner came just hours after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/01\/08\/iran-says-fierce-attack-has-begun-as-rockets-hit-iraq-bases-with-american-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Guard launched a ballistic missile attack on Iraqi bases housing U.S. forces <\/a>in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/01\/03\/iran-threatens-revenge-following-death-of-qasem-soleimani-as-iraq-government-condemns-assassination\/\" target=\"_blank\">retaliation for an earlier American drone strike<\/a> that killed the Guard\u2019s top general, Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A transcript of the recording, published by Ukrainian 1+1 TV channel, contains a conversation in Farsi between an air-traffic controller and a pilot reportedly flying a Fokker 100 jet for Iran&#8217;s Aseman Airlines from Iran&#8217;s southern city of Shiraz to Tehran. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A series of lights like &#8230; yes, it is a missile, is there something?&#8221; the pilot calls out to the controller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;No, how many miles? Where?&#8221; the controller asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilot responds that he saw the light by the Payam airport, near where the Guard&#8217;s Tor M-1 anti-aircraft missile was launched from. The controller says nothing has been reported to them, but the pilot remains insistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is the light of a missile,&#8221; the pilot says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t you see anything anymore?&#8221; the controller asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Dear engineer, it was an explosion. We saw a very big light there, I don&#8217;t really know what it was,&#8221; the pilot responds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controller then tries to contract the Ukrainian jetliner, but unsuccessfully. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/11\/iran-says-it-unintentionally-shot-down-plane\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20008368998768.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Iran says it \u2018unintentionally\u2019 shot down Ukrainian jet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Iran issued a statement Saturday morning that blames \u201chuman error\u201d for the shootdown.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Publicly accessible flight-tracking radar information suggests the Aseman Airlines aircraft, flight No. 3768, was close enough to Tehran to see the blast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian civil aviation authorities for days insisted it wasn\u2019t a missile that brought down the plane, even after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. officials began saying they believed it had been shot down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian officials should have immediately had access to the air-traffic control recordings and Zelenskiy told 1+1 that \u201cthe recording, indeed, shows that the Iranian side knew from the start that our plane was shot down by a missile, they were aware of this at the moment of the shooting.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine\u2019s president repeated his demands to decode the plane\u2019s flight recorders in Kyiv \u2014 something Iranian officials had promised last month but later backtracked on. On Monday, Ukrainian investigators were to travel to Tehran to participate in the decoding effort, but Zelenskiy insisted on bringing the so-called \u201cblack boxes\u201d back to Kyiv. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is very important for us,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian authorities, however, condemned the publication of the recording as \u201cunprofessional,\u201d saying it was part of a confidential report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis action by the Ukrainians makes us not want to give them any more evidence,\u201d said Rezaifar, the head of the Iranian investigators, according to a report by the semiofficial Mehr news agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
