This new law finally allows affected families to take legal action"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wednesday morning President Joe Biden signed into law the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/08\/04\/now-that-the-pact-act-passed-how-soon-will-veterans-see-their-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">Honoring our PACT Act<\/a>, which includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/cartwright.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/camp_lejeune_text_-_2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Camp Lejeune Justice Act<\/a>, marking the culmination of a 25-year fight for justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this law, those adversely impacted by living and working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/03\/14\/va-finalizes-disability-benefits-plans-for-contaminated-water-exposure-at-camp-lejeune\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune<\/a>, North Carolina, from 1953 to 1987 can exercise their constitutional right to legal action against the United States government for toxic water exposure on base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For too long, those who served, and their families, have waited for this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For nearly three decades, enlisted servicemen and women, their families and on-base staff drank, bathed and cooked with water containing known carcinogens, up to 280 times the standard safety limits. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/08\/04\/now-that-the-pact-act-passed-how-soon-will-veterans-see-their-benefits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1242275592.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Now that PACT Act has passed, how soon will veterans see their benefits?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Some portions of the sweeping veterans policy measure will go into effect as soon as it becomes law. Others will take years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This exposure occurred in direct violation of the Department of Navy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/62588607d092a456fabdfff0\/t\/62743ec0d4fbd9278550ded1\/1651785409537\/BUMED62403B.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">established water supply standards<\/a>, which were woefully ignored at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long list of health complications are linked to ongoing exposure to Lejeune\u2019s toxic water, both for those who lived and worked on base, as well as their offspring. Until now, the government has skirted responsibility for this egregious oversight and violation of basic human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My story is only one of more than one million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I served in the Marine Corps for nearly 25 years, training thousands of new recruits. I lived for almost 12 years at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where my daughter Janey was conceived and her mother unknowingly consumed water contaminated with known carcinogens \u2014 such as trichloroethylene, or TCE, and perchloroethylene, or PCE \u2014 during her pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Janey, the only one of my four children conceived at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, died of leukemia at age 9. Her suffering resulted directly from exposure to Camp Lejeune\u2019s toxic water; we have no history of cancer in either family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of an obscure North Carolina law, Janey\u2019s loss, along with hundreds of deceased babies and countless others suffering debilitating health complications, has never been acknowledged by the military or the U.S. government. With the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, that all changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, those who resided or worked at Camp Lejeune for 30 days or more over the three decade period can file a civil claim against the U.S. government to provide compensation for the damage caused by exposure to the base\u2019s contaminated water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We finally have won our right to pursue due process in the court system. A family may file on behalf of the deceased and for past expenses, loss of quality of life and can sue for pain, suffering and illness due to a loved one\u2019s exposure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Victims of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, water contamination have two years from the statute\u2019s date of enactment to file suit. Even those who received health benefits from the Veterans Administration are still eligible for reparation for medical coverage \u2014 past, present and future \u2014 as well as a loss of quality of life and pain and suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been a long, arduous road to reach this point. But all those we\u2019ve lost, and all who continue to suffer deserve this justice, wrongfully denied for so long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we embark on the next step in this journey for justice, it\u2019s imperative that we raise awareness of the Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, toxic water exposure problem. The Department of Defense is our nation\u2019s largest polluter \u2014 and ultimately polluted the water supply on its own military base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All victims of this exposure deserve their day in court for compensation and to fight to ensure that this never happens again to any other military community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Retired Marine Corps Master Sgt.
