In several cases, the devices have been repurposed for that task, and may be several degrees off in their assessment of visitors&#8217; body temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany of the devices procured, in particular, the hundreds of fever tablets\/kiosks, have serious risks in design and implementation,\u201d the organization wrote in their report. \u201cWorse, IPVM tried for a month to inform and warn the VA of these risks yet has not received any material response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/04\/vas-active-coronavirus-cases-reach-record-level\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VA.jpg_d7ce7c.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA\u2019s active coronavirus cases reach record level<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Nearly 6,700 department patients are dealing with the fast-spreading virus.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At issue is a mixture of different purchasing efforts for the medical equipment at hospitals across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere was no apparent standardization to the purchase of these medical devices by the VA,\u201d the report states. \u201cQuality ranges from FDA 510(K) cleared at the high-end to low-cost, unreliable tablets using thermopile sensors that \u2026 have far inferior resolution to world (fever) screening standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fever checks have become commonplace at hospitals, federal offices and a host of other locations as a potential indicator of coronavirus infection. IPVM officials said that unreliable temperature devices could mean that \u201cthe lives of veterans are endangered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials did not respond to IPVM requests for comment on the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/09\/va-transition-work-on-hold-as-trump-disputes-biden-election-win\/\" target=_blank>interview with Military Times on Monday<\/a>, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said that he has not reviewed the report but is not worried about the potential threat to veterans and hospital staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRemember, we have redundancy in the system,\u201d he said. &#8220;We not only have temperature checks, but we ask a series of questions. We do multiple screenings before anybody enters into a facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI certainly haven\u2019t heard of any problems with any of our thermometers out there. We use a variety. Roughly 630 are inpatients at hospitals across the country. Both figures are up more than 75 percent in the last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the initial wave of the coronavirus pandemic, VA leaders partially shuttered services to non-emergency employees and veterans undergoing elective surgeries. In recent months, VA has reversed those moves, re-opening the locations to some visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, all visitors are advised to call ahead before traveling to a facility, and must submit to a series of medical screenings, including a questionnaire about any potential coronavirus symptoms and on-site checks of individuals&#8217;
