John C. \u201cLung\u201d Aquilino\u2019s order for all 7th Fleet ships to wait at least 14 days before visiting another port within the 7th Fleet\u2019s area of operations, thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. This allows time to ensure crews don\u2019t contract the illness, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/26\/first-us-service-member-tests-positive-for-coronavirus-in-south-korea\/\" target=_blank>COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been actually looking at this for several weeks now. I know it\u2019s sort of come out in the news lately that we\u2019re taking these actions, but we\u2019ve been looking at this for a very long time,\u201d Modly said Friday in a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt. \u201cAnd we\u2019re going to keep whatever actions and restrictions in place as long as we feel that there may be some risk to our sailors. So we\u2019re going to continue to do this and monitor it closely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/02\/27\/pacific-fleet-orders-at-least-14-day-underways-for-ships-visiting-nations-in-7th-fleet-aor-as-coronavirus-spreads\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/BRQ.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pacific Fleet orders at least 14-day underways for ships visiting nations in 7th Fleet AOR as coronavirus spreads<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">On Tuesday, a U.S. soldier stationed in South Korea became the first service member to test positive for the virus.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Aquilino\u2019s order did not specify how long the directive would last, Modly signaled that the order could remain for a \u201cwhile\u201d and that the Navy would adapt to ensure supplies are appropriately distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we are prepared to deal with this for a while,\u201d Modly said. \u201cAnd as it evolves, you know, we\u2019ll come up with different contingencies in terms of how we might get supplies out to the ships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 7th Fleet, based in Yokosuka, Japan, is the largest of the Navy\u2019s forward deployed fleets and its area of operation covers 36 countries including China, Russia, North Korea, and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 7th Fleet told Military Times on Monday it was starting to conduct checks for all crew members and others before infiltrating 7th Fleet units, in order to halt the spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/25\/6-people-quarantined-at-lackland-afb-have-coronavirus-report\/\" target=_blank>COVID-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have developed plans to screen all personnel including but not limited to crew, visitors, civilians, contractors, and new check-ins gaining access to C7F units and platforms,\u201d 7th Fleet spokesperson Cmdr. Reann Mommsen said in an email to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, the 7th Fleet\u2019s flagship \u2014 amphibious command ship Blue Ridge \u2014 pulled into port in Laem Chabang, Thailand for a scheduled port visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, the amphibious assault ship America and dock landing ship Green Bay arrived in Chuck Samet, Thailand on Saturday for a scheduled port visit ahead of Cobra Gold, a multinational military exercise that kicked off on Tuesday in Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 5,500 U.S. troops are participating in this year\u2019s Cobra Gold exercise, and military officials said there are additional medical resources this year to prevent troops from getting sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs part of the mitigation strategy we have brought additional medical capabilities, supplies, to include individual personal protective equipment, and additional preventive medicine specialists,\u201d Marine Corps Capt. George McArthur, a spokesman for the Cobra Gold 2020 Combined-Joint Information Bureau, said in an email to Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDealing with the threat of disease or illness is a common planning factor for all military operations and the U.S. military is fully prepared to successfully operate in any environment,\u201d McArthur said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These efforts include screening U.S. force personnel before and after arrival in Thailand, according to Army Lt. Col. Luke Mease, the senior medical authority deployed to Cobra Gold. Mease told Military Times that U.S. joint forces have also deployed more than 35 additional medical personnel to facilitate detecting the virus during the exercise, which concludes on March 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, one soldier stationed in at Camp Carroll in South Korea has tested positive for the coronavirus. Outside of China, South Korea where more than 28,000 U.S. troops are stationed has had the most confirmed cases of the illness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Modley signaled
