McDonough<\/a> acknowledged that he is \u201cfrustrated\u201d with inconsistency in how medical appointment wait time data is calculated and recorded within the department\u2019s health care systems, and promised changes on the issue later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During testimony before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/04\/06\/spike-in-veteran-calls-expected-with-launch-of-new-three-digit-suicide-prevention-line-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Appropriations Committee<\/a> this week, McDonough said he is concerned about delivering accurate information on appointment timeliness to veterans as they seek to resume care that was deferred or canceled in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you look at our average wait times across the system, they\u2019re good, but it\u2019s a big system and we\u2019re coming out of a pandemic,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I fear that there are outliers where people are waiting too long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait times at VA facilities became a national scandal in 2014 after whistleblowers revealed that officials were manipulating data to cover up long delays in care to meet performance metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During President Donald Trump\u2019s administration, the department began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accesstocare.va.gov\/PWT\/SearchWaitTimes\" target=\"_blank\">posting wait-time data online<\/a> for all VA hospitals and clinics in an effort to provide more transparency into how long veterans have to wait for routine or specialty appointments (and to argue for broader use of community care options for veterans facing longer waits).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/oig\/pubs\/VAOIG-21-02761-125.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">in a report released Thursda<\/a>y, the VA Inspector General\u2019s office said much of that data remains confusing and misleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[The Veterans Health Administration] has sometimes presented wait times with different methodologies, using inconsistent start dates that affect the overall calculations without clearly and accurately presenting that information to the public,\u201d officials wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to similar concerns raised by lawmakers, McDonough said that \u201cwe have to do a better job with that\u201d and said he expects an announcement on changes related to the wait time issues in coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re working really hard on it because I am frustrated with it myself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA health officials have predicted a significant rise in appointment requests in coming months, as pandemic conditions across the country improve and more veterans resume deferred care.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a potential workload burdens on Veterans Affairs workers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That in turn has raised concerns about pressure on the VA health care system, and whether veterans could see a significant increase in the time it takes to schedule appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health officials have touted new pandemic telehealth options within the department as a way to help ease the burden on facilities facing increased requests. But lawmakers this week noted that in rural areas \u2014 locations with some of the longest wait times already \u2014 a lack of reliable internet access may limit the availability of those services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservative groups have pointed to issues with wait times in VA medical care as evidence that the department needs broader use of private-sector alternatives for veterans. In a statement Friday, officials from Concerned Veterans for America said they have serious concerns with the failings reported by the inspector general. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCVA has been calling out the VA\u2019s transgressions in both calculation and presentation of patient wait times,\u201d said Russ Duerstine, deputy director for the group. \u201cI can only imagine the frustration a veteran must experience when they can\u2019t find a straight answer to how long it will take to get care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But critics of plans to shift more care to private-sector physicians have maintained that wait time data for those community care options is typically less reliable or
