Here are some last-minute tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re in the path of possible wrath from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/09\/11\/military-bases-troops-brace-for-monster-hurricane-florence-on-east-coast-super-typhoon-in-pacific\/\">Hurricane Florence<\/a>, here are some quick reminders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Know your emergency procedures. Sign up for community-wide or installation-wide alerts, and follow leaders\u2019 instructions.<\/li><li>Know your orders. When military family members are traveling with evacuation orders in hand, you\u2019re eligible for certain reimbursements for lodging and meals. There are procedures outline for submitting requests for travel advances, and for submitting claims.&nbsp;<\/li><li>During disasters and emergency evacuations, the services and DoD have systems set up to help officials account for their personnel in the areas affected. For disaster and evacuation emergency contact information, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militaryonesource.mil\/emergency-contacts-for-disasters-evacuations\" target=_blank>www.militaryonesource.mil\/emergency-contacts-for-disasters-evacuations<\/a>.<\/li><li>Fill your vehicle\u2019s gas tank. (And make it a habit in the future to keep at least a half a tank full of gas at all times.) &nbsp;Check the availability of fuel at your exchange gas station on base. The Marine Corps Exchange has had no reports of problems with availability of fuel, for example, according to spokesman Bryan Driver. &nbsp;Navy Exchange gas stations in the Hampton Roads area still have gas, said spokeswoman Kristine Sturkie. But note some bases in the expected area of impact are under evacuation orders, which generally means closures of facilities.<\/li><li>Get your prescriptions refilled now, if at all possible. If not, there are options.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Know Tricare\u2019s policies related to health benefits during disasters. Currently, there are temporary emergency refill policies in effect for &nbsp;all of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, because states of emergency have been declared in advance of Hurricane Florence. There are also procedures in place for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of Typhoon Mangkhut. Both these emergency policies are in place through Sept. 20.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means you can get an emergency refill at any Tricare network pharmacy. It\u2019s best to get the refill at the pharmacy where the prescription was filled, but you can get the refill at any pharmacy in the network. Take your prescription bottle with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tricare beneficiaries don\u2019t need a referral to get care from Tricare-authorized urgent care providers. This allows you to get nonemergency care for illnesses or injuries if the primary care provider is unavailable because of weather disruptions, or, for example, you\u2019ve evacuated the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you still need emergency supplies, check with installation stores. Commissaries have been running specials on a variety of emergency supplies, and will continue to do so through Oct. 31; and they always adjust to add extra storm-related supplies. &nbsp;Navy Exchange stores in the Hampton Roads area received a truckload of hurricane supplies Tuesday, including water and generators, and supplies are selling quickly, said spokeswoman Kristine Sturkie. Another truckload is scheduled for Wednesday. Joint Base Charleston\u2019s main store and student store will open from 8 a.m. until noon Wednesday. &nbsp;Marine Corps Exchanges have heard no reports of problems with availability of products. Exchange officials started preparations Sept. 4, and have been sending shipments of necessary supplies like water and batteries to stores, Driver said. At Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia, the exchange has prepared to support the influx of recruits and other personnel evacuating from bases. At Camp Lejeune, some exchange stores will be closed Wednesday; the MCX at Marine Corps Air Station New River will remain open unless conditions worsen. At Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, most Marine Corps Community services closed at noon Tuesday; the convenience store will close at the normal time Tuesday night but won\u2019t reopen Wednesday; and the MCX Troop Store will stay open as long as possible, Driver said.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Make an emergency communication plan. Decide on a point of contact \u2013 a friend or family member in another state or region not expected to be affected by the storm \u2013 so that family members dispersed locally can stay in touch. Make sure everyone has cellphone numbers, so you can call or text. You may decide to use email or social media. &nbsp;<\/li><li>Document your property. You can do this quickly, by taking cellphone videos of each room, describing items as you go. Perhaps take pictures of items and appraisals or other documentation, and load them on a disc or thumb drive, or use cloud storage. Take additional videos if you\u2019re still there when flooding happens; and when you first return to your home, to record the damage. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>GET THESE ITEMS READY NOW<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Documents. In a waterproof container, put passports, birth certificates, marriage license, Social Security card, shot records, insurance policies, important medical or military information and documents, and important phone numbers. As you go, grab you drivers\u2019 licenses, military ID cards, checkbook, debit and credit cards.<\/li><li>Cash. Stash what you can ahead of time, because cash will be king if there\u2019s no power, no working ATMs, no writing checks or using any sort of electronic payment at stores.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Goods. If you\u2019re leaving without a vehicle, you\u2019ll be limited to what each family member can carry. You\u2019ll want water, nonperishable food, clothes and shoes, toiletries, first-aid supplies, a cellphone charger, a battery-operated radio and batteries. If you\u2019re leaving in a vehicle, the &nbsp;Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends adding things like a three-day supply of food and water for each family member, including infant formula and diapers; other necessities to meet special needs of family members, such as the elderly; and consider sleeping bags and blankets, and paper plates, cups and utensils;, moist towelettes; books and games and other activities for children. If you have a pet, don\u2019t forget food, supplies and extra water. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>SECURE THE PREMISES<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you\u2019re living in base housing, follow the instructions of base officials or your housing manager for securing your home.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Bring items inside that could become projectiles in high winds \u2013 such as lightweight patio furniture and garbage cans, kids\u2019 toys and bikes. Anchor items that can\u2019t be brought inside, such as propane tanks. Get rid of branches and yard debris.
