We see you. We will do everything in our power to support you \u2026 not just because it\u2019s the right thing to do, but also because supporting caregivers improves outcomes for veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2021\/09\/22\/thousands-of-caregivers-may-lose-monthly-stipends-under-new-va-review\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_677249654013.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Thousands of caregivers may lose monthly stipends under new VA review<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Nearly 20,000 caregivers of injured veterans will have their cases re-examined to see if they still qualify for the benefit.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments come roughly a month after the department announced plans for a full review of the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers, a move that could take away monthly support stipends for thousands of caretakers who no longer qualify for the benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials have promised that no families will see reductions in stipends before fall 2022, and families being booted from the program won\u2019t lose their benefits until early 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials are also scheduled to expand eligibility for the program next fall, to allow caregivers of veterans from any era to apply. Currently, the stipends are available only to family members of veterans who served before May 7, 1975, or after Sept. 11, 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monthly stipends are based on federal locality pay rules where veterans live. For a veteran living in Phoenix, for example, the caregiver of a veteran unable to live without full-time assistance would receive about $2,700 a month, and a caregiver of a veteran who needs only partial help would receive about $1,700 a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough said in his remarks Friday that the final phase of the stipend expansion is on track, but the department is also looking for ways to improve support services for families who may not qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have dedicated staff at every VA Medical Center ready to meet with caregivers to help identify their veterans\u2019 needs and come up with a plan to address them,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that also means access to health care [for caregivers] \u2026 by improving caregiver outcomes, we improve veteran outcomes too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/04\/22\/caregivers-rejected-for-va-financial-aid-could-get-new-appeal-chances\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/22607887063_c65398cdb7_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Caregivers rejected for VA financial aid could get new appeal chances<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims says families should get a chance to take their cases to the Board of Veterans&#039; Appeals, which handles other benefits disputes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The secretary also noted efforts during the height of the coronavirus pandemic to get medical equipment safely to veterans being cared for at home, and the push by the administration to get caregivers\u2019 vaccines at the same time as their veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, he told conference viewers, \u201cwe need to continue to do better for veterans and caregivers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocates have said they will closely monitor that pledge, especially as the deadlines on VA\u2019s caregivers program approach next year. About 33,000 individuals are currently participating in the program, but officials have estimated that number could double in coming years as the program eligibility is
