Lawmakers were informed of the delay Friday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials had planned to deploy the software at the Puget Sound VA Health Care System (American Lake and Seattle VA Medical Centers) this August, but will now delay that work until March 2023 instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, plans to deploy the platform to the VA Portland Health Care System (Portland and Portland-Vancouver VA Medical Centers) will shift from this November to April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/04\/26\/lawmakers-urge-pause-in-new-va-health-records-system-rollout-amid-more-problems\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fed-nicole-data-technologiejpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lawmakers urge pause in new VA health records system rollout amid more problems<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The VA hopes to deploy the new system to multiple new sites later this year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn evaluating [the sites\u2019] readiness for deployment, VA determined the system hadn\u2019t shown adequate reliability to support the current schedule,\u201d officials said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe date was changed to allow Oracle Cerner to put important system enhancements in place and make the necessary improvements to ensure system stability \u2026 as well as fix outstanding issues to address research workflow challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steps already underway to deploy the system to VA sites in Idaho next month will remain unchanged, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10-year, $16-billion electronics health records overhaul has faced numerous delays in the past few years, both because of pandemic complications and implementation problems at initial rollout sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When then-President Donald Trump announced the plan in 2017, the goal was to provide a seamless, lifelong medical record for service members starting from their day of enlistment through their post-military life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But putting the system into place at VA has proven challenging, with numerous problems and frustrations emerging from the initial rollout of the system at Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Washington in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, VA Secretary Denis McDonough ordered a halt to the work so officials could evaluate and correct challenges that emerged there. But three months ago, the VA Inspector General\u2019s Office said that serious safety issues regarding patient medications and mental health flags remained unresolved with the new system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA planners deployed the system to the Central Ohio Healthcare System in May, the third site so far in the implementation process. Department leaders said that work has progressed on schedule, and the delay of the other sites is not indicative of problems there.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link forced the health records offline for a day last week, disrupting medical operations at a Washington state site.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they acknowledge that \u201cthere have been unanticipated outages and system degradations from the onset of the new [health records] rollout\u201d so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe revised deployment schedule will enable Oracle Cerner to address these potential gaps in system reliability, particularly in the more complex sites that are upcoming,\u201d officials said. \u201cBetween major deployments VA will continue to work vigorously to ensure that the system has the capability enhancements and is optimized to support deployment [at future sites].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department leaders also said they are committed to \u201csafe and successful deployments\u201d and the changes in
