{"id":55748,"date":"2018-11-07T22:25:53","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T22:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/11\/07\/congress-names-aviation-crisis-panel-members\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:02:11","slug":"congress-names-aviation-crisis-panel-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/11\/07\/congress-names-aviation-crisis-panel-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Retired general, former Army secretary named to panel studying military aviation crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday announced that it had selected a retired general and former lawmaker to join an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/05\/09\/house-armed-services-okays-pursuing-independent-commission-to-review-aviation-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\">eight-person independent commission<\/a> looking into the reasons behind a spate of aviation mishaps that has killed scores of pilots and their crews over the last several years.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/aviation-in-crisis\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Aviation in Crisis: 133 service members killed in five years <\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Commission on Military Aviation Safety was established in the 2019 defense bill after a series of congressional hearings where Military Times&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/06\/military-times-aviation-database\/\" target=_blank>in-depth investigations <\/a>into the rising number of military aviation mishaps <a href=\"https:\/\/armedservices.house.gov\/news\/defense-drumbeat\/military-times-fatal-aviation-crashes-reach-6-year-high-pentagon-says-not\" target=_blank>was repeatedly cited <\/a>and used to question the services on the accidents. The series was ultimately also cited in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/05\/24\/house-overwhelmingly-backs-plan-to-rebuild-our-military\/\" target=_blank>legislation<\/a> addressing the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The House and Senate armed service committee leaders each name two panelists, and the president names four panelists. On the House side, outgoing Chairman Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, has selected former Texas congressman and Secretary of the Army Pete Geren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outgoing Ranking member Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., who is expected to become the next HASC chairman following Tuesday\u2019s elections, has selected retired Gen. Raymond E. Johns Jr., a former test pilot with more than 5,000 flight hours, who also served in multiple DoD and Air Force leadership positions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
