{"id":56004,"date":"2019-01-06T14:56:15","date_gmt":"2019-01-06T14:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/06\/pingers-from-kc-130j-fa-18d-japan-crash-detected\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:35:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:35:00","slug":"pingers-from-kc-130j-fa-18d-japan-crash-detected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/06\/pingers-from-kc-130j-fa-18d-japan-crash-detected\/","title":{"rendered":"Flight data recorders likely found from 2 Marine Corps aircraft that crashed off Japan coast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three distinct signals thought to be from the flight data recorders from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/12\/05\/search-and-rescue-off-japanese-coast-underway-after-marine-corps-c-130-and-fa-18-fighter-jet-crash\/\" target=_blank>Marine Corps KC-130J and F\/A-18D<\/a> that crashed off the coast of Japan last month have been detected, the Marine Corps confirmed Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five crew from a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/12\/12\/marines-identity-5-kc-130j-crew-members-killed-in-midair-collision-off-the-japanese-coast\/\" target=_blank> KC-130J <\/a>assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, or \u201cSumos\u201d squadron, and the pilot of the two-person <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/12\/07\/marines-identify-fa-18-pilot-killed-in-crash-off-japanese-coast-c-130-crew-still-missing\/\" target=_blank>F\/A-18D<\/a> Hornet assigned to Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242, or \u201cBats,\u201d were killed Dec. 6 in an accident over the Philippine Sea that has been described by Japanese defense officials as a midair collision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation into what caused the crash is expected to take months, the Marine Corps previously said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/12\/12\/marines-identity-5-kc-130j-crew-members-killed-in-midair-collision-off-the-japanese-coast\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/kc130japan.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">&#8216;Eternally missed\u2019: Marines identify 5 KC-130J crew members killed in midair collision off Japanese coast<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The lone survivor in the tragic midair collision has since been released from the hospital and Corps officials have not released the Marine\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F\/A-18\u2032s weapons officer was rescued and was the sole survivor of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy dispatched a salvage team from Yokosuka Naval Base Dec. 17, and arrived at the scene Dec. 18 with a TPL-25 towed pinger locator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn Dec. 19, signals were detected and by Dec. 21, the team was able to confirm three distinct pingers at a depth of approximately 3,000 meters (9,843 feet)&#8221; However, given the extreme depth of the location of the signals, salvage and recovery will have to be \u201cweighed by an overall risk assessment encompassing weather, sea state, water depth, underwater current and seabed environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The search for survivors was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/11\/search-called-off-for-5-marines-aboard-lost-c-130\/?fbclid=IwAR3aObkNQP0tGmRph6JiY0eENBzOCgwWa4WC7jeOB0o-RIpXSXWwByrYtCU\" target=_blank>called off<\/a> after a massive, multi-day operation with Japanese, U.S. and Australian forces was unable to find the missing Marines, despite combing nearly 35,000 square nautical miles
