{"id":56180,"date":"2021-06-04T20:23:53","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T20:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/06\/04\/pentagons-ban-on-pride-and-nearly-all-other-flags-is-staying\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:51:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:51:56","slug":"pentagons-ban-on-pride-and-nearly-all-other-flags-is-staying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/04\/pentagons-ban-on-pride-and-nearly-all-other-flags-is-staying\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon\u2019s ban on Pride, and nearly all other, flags is staying"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a review, the Pentagon has decided not to grant an exception to display LGBTQ+ flags on military installations during June, the official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/07\/31\/theres-a-movement-building-to-reverse-dods-policy-on-lgbtq-pride-flag-and-other-banners\/\" target=\"_blank\">LGBTQ+ pride month<\/a>, a Pentagon spokesman told reporters on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department is sticking with a policy created a year ago by then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper in response to calls for banning the display of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/07\/17\/confederate-flag-effectively-banned-from-military-installations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate flag<\/a> in offices and communal housing spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter some careful consideration, the department will maintain the existing policy from July of 2020 regarding the display or depiction of unofficial flags,\u201d John Kirby said. \u201cSo there won\u2019t be an exception made this month for the Pride flag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership had considered making an exception for June, during which the services and the department participate in celebrations and other displays of support for Pride month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis was really more about the potential for &#8230; other challenges that could arise from that exception, that specific exception,\u201d Kirby added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flag policy explicitly bans all unofficial flags from public display on installations, from social movements to sports teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esper faced immediate backlash after the policy went live, but in a interview with Military Times ahead of his ouster in November, he defended his decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/11\/09\/exclusive-esper-on-his-way-out-says-he-was-no-yes-man\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/49967501917_3ccce4d952_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Exclusive: Esper, on his way out, says he was no yes man<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Defense Secretary Mark Esper called Military Times for a lengthy discussion of his time in office.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I thought I had a really clever way, creative way of addressing it,\u201d he said, in an attempt not to single out any one flag or group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/06\/06\/marine-corps-bars-public-display-of-confederate-flag-on-installations\/\" target=\"_blank\">as the Marine Corps did just weeks earlier.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The policy strictly allows only U.S. flags, POW\/MIA flags, U.S. state flags, military\/unit flags and, in some cases, flags of allied countries, when their representatives are on official visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I don\u2019t want the military politicized any which way \u2014 I don\u2019t want a Confederate flag. I don\u2019t want a Proud Boys flag \u2026 take any of your groups on the left, I don\u2019t want their flags,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The policy will stay in place for the time being, Kirby said, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has no plans for a deeper review to make it more precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd as we speak right
