Gen. Earl Van Dorn managed to drive off Maj. Gen. John Pope&#8217;s Army of the Mississippi. In Florida, however, Confederate forces were driven out of Fort Pickens (now Pensacola).<br\/><br\/> 1915: The Allies took on the Germans in the Battle of Artois, which ended bloodily but inconclusively on June 18.<br\/><br\/> 1943: The German Fifth Panzer Army surrendered in Tunisia.<br\/><br\/> 1944: Soviet forces secured Sebastopol.<br\/><br\/> 1945: While the Soviets celebrated Victory Day in Red Square, Czechoslovakia was liberated, the British liberated the Channel Islands, Yugoslav Partisans liberated Ljubljana, Norwegian Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling was arrested and
