WASHINGTON \u2014 Veterans Affairs officials in coming weeks will roll out new partnerships with at least seven states to focus attention and resources on preventing veterans suicide<\/a>, re-upping a successful tool from their earlier campaigns to end veterans homelessness<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Keita Franklin<\/a>, director of VA\u2019s office of suicide prevention, said Tuesday during a congressional staff briefing on the topic that department officials will be announcing a new \u201cgovernor\u2019s challenge\u201d to expand ongoing prevention programs to audiences outside the veterans community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVA must lead on this, and it\u2019s our responsibility to prevent veterans suicide,\u201d she said. \u201cBut when I can have a partner take our training, have them pass out our crisis number, develop peer mentoring models in workplaces, if I can help them make sure veterans have access to health care, that\u2019s when we know we\u2019re doing the work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re shifting from a model that says \u2018let\u2019s sit in our hospitals and wait for people to come to us\u2019 and take it to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
