Director Rod Lurie had a \u201ctough as hell time trying to figure out how we were gonna design shots where for the first few weeks I couldn\u2019t walk,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lurie rescheduled the entire shoot, starting with static scenes and shifting the action to the end. \u201cWhen you see Scott Eastwood in this movie, running and gunning, you gotta remember this dude has got a broken ankle and he\u2019s a bit of a stud. Just like his dad,\u201d he jokes. Eastwood, who portrays <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/hero\/96327\" target=_blank>Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha<\/a>, is the son of action-movie actor Clint Eastwood. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/05\/21\/watch-the-first-trailer-for-the-battle-of-kamdesh-film-the-outpost\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image003.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Watch the first trailer for the Battle of Kamdesh thriller, \u2018The Outpost\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Given the magnitude of the film\u2019s subject, let\u2019s hope it does it justice.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Outpost,\u201d which also stars Orlando Bloom and Caleb Landry Jones, follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2019\/10\/05\/these-two-medal-of-honor-recipients\/\" target=_blank>the Battle of Kamdesh<\/a> in Afghanistan in 2009. The Taliban attacked a remote American Combat Outpost, deep in the mountains, that was nearly impossible to defend. Despite winning the battle and holding the base, eight American soldiers died.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a story of \u201cregular soldiers\u201d Lurie explains. \u201cThese guys are on the ground, they have to pay the penalty not just for being in a war, but also for maybe the tactical and strategic mistakes of the command above them.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a pro-military film. (Screen Media via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movie is based on the book \u201cThe Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor,\u201d by CNN journalist Jake Tapper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making \u201cThe Outpost\u201d was made even more personal for Lurie when his son Hunter died suddenly during pre-production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was 27 years old,\u201d Lurie explains, \u201cand when he did die, and he did it right in front of my eyes, he himself became a reminder of the men who died in this battle. Because he was roughly the same age as those guys.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter Lurie died in 2018  after going into cardiac arrest at a music festival.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lurie said he wanted to shoot the soldiers who lost their lives in the battle \u201chonorably and without the glamorization.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s done without musical flourish. It\u2019s done without a single bullet that actually felled those guys. And I did that, not in honor, but in respect of the families of the men,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/04\/the-battle-of-kamdesh-which-netted-two-medals-of-honor-is-coming-to-the-big-screen-twice\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6200910910310306arjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Battle of Kamdesh, which netted two Medals of Honor, is coming to the big screen \u2015 twice<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cThe Outpost\u201d is reportedly set to begin production later this summer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones portrays <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/hero\/98177\" target=_blank>Spc. Ty Carter<\/a>, a survivor who was awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2013\/08\/27\/army-staff-sgt-ty-carter-receives-medal-of-honor-soldier-is-second-to-earn-the-award-for-fierce-cop-keating-battle\/\" target=_blank>the Medal of Honor<\/a>. Jones said he was inspired by Lurie\u2019s direction.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was excited that it seemed that this man was wanting to not only do the story but wanted to do everything within his power to make sure that we do right by these men that fought for our freedom,\u201d said Jones, who has had roles in \u201cX-Men: First Class&#8221; and \u201cGet Out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is \u201ca very visceral and kinetic storytelling of this. It leaves you with the people. You\u2019re with them in uncomfortable times, in times of extreme emotion, dealing with the psychological effects.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI felt what it must have been like to be there and to lose people and to be a part of that,\u201d Eastwood said. \u201cAnd I just found myself very emotional.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2013\/08\/05\/courage-at-keating-second-moh-9-silver-stars-for-standout-b-troop\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/m6201310308040001arjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Courage at Keating: 2 Medals of Honor, 1 DSC, 8 Silver Stars for standout B Troop<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The battle at Combat Outpost Keating remains one of the deadliest attacks on U.S. forces since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan \u2014 and it is the first battle to produce two Medal of Honor recipients since the Battle of Mogadishu almost 20 years ago<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bloom, who plays Capt. Ben Keating, said he felt a \u201cduty of responsibility\u201d to his character. He talked with Keating\u2019s father and worked some of those shared memories into his portrayal.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI felt very connected to him and I think all of the boys out there did too, you know, to their own characters,\u201d Bloom said. \u201cAnd it was, it was very sincere, you know &#8230; There was a lot of heart in it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones was encouraged to go for the role of Carter by his older brother, who serves in the Marines.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe read it and you know a few hours then he said, Caleb, you\u2019re doing it. And I said, is it good? And he said, no, you don\u2019t understand. You\u2019re doing it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jones felt the added pressure of his brother and the real-life Carter being on the set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m surprised I didn\u2019t run away or something. You know, my older brother watching, Ty the guy I\u2019m playing watching\u2026I already make it hard on myself!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, he says it added to the depth of his performance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo be able to look over and see him in the eyes and see him nod or see him shake his head or being able to look at Ty too and see that if I\u2019m doing anything right at all by trying to convey this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very honored,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
