The problem has been the availability of cartridges and swabs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The admission from Stone came amid questioning from committee ranking member Jon Tester, D-Mont., concerning frustration he has heard from employees wanting to know whether their work caring for veterans has endangered their own health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1,500 VA employees have tested positive for coronavirus in the last three months, and 32 staffers have died.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/05\/29\/veterans-disability-exams-to-resume-at-some-sites-as-backlog-hits-114000-nearly-doubling-in-six-months\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_21720922750-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans disability exams to resume at some sites as backlog hits 114,000, nearly doubling in six months<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Currently 114,000 veterans are waiting for compensation and pension exams to finalize their disability claims.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA Secretary Robert Wilkie has noted that infection rate is lower than most other major medical systems in America, \u201cless than one half of one percent.\u201d Stone said that about 12 percent of the department workforce has been tested so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Union officials have expressed concerns in recent months over a lack of personal protective equipment and testing supplies, saying that leaders have ignored problematic shortages and endangered employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Wilkie countered that charge, saying a quick response by VA staff has helped keep the workforce and patients as safe as possible amid a global pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThousands of VA employees have put themselves in harm\u2019s way,\u201d he said. \u201cThey deserve the thanks of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stone said officials are working on the testing supply shortages now, and said the department\u2019s intent remains to have tests available for the entire workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/01\/protesters-damage-veterans-affairs-headquarters-several-dc-war-monuments\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20153414501580.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Protesters damage Veterans Affairs headquarters, several DC war monuments<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA officials spent Monday morning working to assess the extent of the protest damage.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the VA health system, more than 195,000 patients have been tested for the fast-spreading coronavirus, with about 7.5 percent of those showing evidence of infection. In the last three months, 1,560 patients in VA care have died from complications related to the illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie said he is confident that the trendline in cases for the department is positive, despite an increase in active cases over the past weekend. He said many of those cases are individuals receiving at-home care but registered in the VA health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stone said the department is planning for \u201chaving about 600 patients as inpatients for COVID-19 all the way through the fall.\u201d VA has the capacity to safely handle that figure, but is monitoring whether another surge of cases may
