Tricare covers uniformed service members, retirees and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alleged conduct resulted in more than $180 million in fraudulent billings, including more than $50 million paid by federal health care programs, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/military-retirement\/2017\/07\/14\/tricare-cases-part-of-nation-s-largest-ever-health-care-fraud-sweep\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tns-sorting-pills.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Tricare cases part of nation&#8217;s largest-ever health care fraud sweep<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Justice Department officials have charged at least four people in connection with schemes to defraud Tricare as part of a larger fraud \u201ctakedown\u201d that resulted in charges against 412 people involving $1.3 billion in taxpayer dollars.\r\n<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoemaker participated in the scheme by acting as a marketer for a network of pharmacies owned and operated by co-conspirators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/mississippi-pharmacist-and-louisiana-marketer-plead-guilty-more-180-million-health-care-fraud\" target=\"_blank\">Mitchell Barrett<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/mississippi-pharmacist-pleads-guilty-more-180-million-health-care-fraud-scheme\" target=\"_blank\">David Rutland<\/a>. Shoemaker worked with the pharmacies to use his Tricare insurance to adjust prescription formulas to ensure the highest reimbursement without regard to efficacy, and he recruited doctors to procure prescriptions for high margin compounded medications. Shoemaker also obtained numerous fraudulent prescriptions using the personal information of military acquaintances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoemaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdms\/pr\/louisiana-compound-marketer-pleads-guilty-conspiracy-pay-illegal-kickbacks-and\" target=\"_blank\">pleaded guilty on Aug. 12<\/a> to conspiracy to defraud the United States and solicit, receive, offer, and pay illegal kickbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the prison sentence, Shoemaker was ordered to pay
