SEOUL, South Korea \u2014 South Korea\u2019s leader said Thursday he and President Joe Biden have agreed to further bolster their countries\u2019 alliance and work together to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After his first phone talks with Biden since the U.S. president\u2019s Jan. 20 inauguration, President Moon Jae-in tweeted that \u201cI just had a great conversation with President @JoeBiden @POTUS\u201d and that he welcomed \u201cAmerica\u2019s return\u201d in the midst of global challenges such as COVID-19, climate change and economic polarization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moon said he and Biden \u201cpledged to further upgrade the ROK-US alliance, an alliance that is anchored in shared values.\u201d ROK refers to Republic of Korea, South Korea\u2019s formal name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will always stand together as we work for peace on the Korean Peninsula and tackle global challenges,\u201d Moon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moon, who took office in 2017, was once a driving force behind now-dormant diplomacy<\/a> between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and former President Donald Trump. The Kim-Trump talks collapsed <\/a>in early 2019 when the Americans rejected North Korea\u2019s calls for extensive sanctions relief in return for limited denuclearization steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moon, who still wants to resume the nuclear diplomacy, said last month that Biden could learn from Trump\u2019s successes and failures in dealing with North Korea though he acknowledged Biden was likely to try a different approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Biden has called Kim a \u201cthug\u201d and criticized Trump for seeking made-for-TV summits with Kim<\/a>. Experts say Biden won\u2019t likely sit down for one-on-one talks with Kim unless working-level officials sort out details and confirm North Korea\u2019s sincerity in denuclearization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Last month, Kim said at a major political conference that the fate of his country\u2019s relations with the U.S. depends on whether Washington abandons what he calls its hostile policy on the North. He disclosed an array of high-tech nuclear weapons systems under development in an apparent effort to apply pressure on the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The U.S., which stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea, regularly stages military drills with South Korea<\/a>. North Korea views such training as an invasion rehearsal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
