Chesty XV retires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is the 16th in the line of English Bulldogs to serve in this capacity since World War I, when Marines became known as \u201cdevil dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe English Bulldog is a loyal, tenacious and faithful breed, making it the perfect mascot for the United States Marine Corps,\u201d the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/7031453\/marine-barracks-washington-welcomes-new-marine-corps-official-mascot\" target=\"_blank\">post about the retirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Named for Lt. Gen. Lewis \u201cChesty\u201d Puller, the most decorated Marine in history, this canine breed has served as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/09\/06\/1979-marine-mascot-chesty-vi-was-demoted-for-destroying-government-property-among-other-offenses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine mascots<\/a> since July 1957. Since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/veterans-day\/k9-veterans-day\/very-serious-look-chesty-marine-corps-mascot.html\">there have been 15<\/a> to carry the legendary Marine\u2019s moniker.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/09\/06\/1979-marine-mascot-chesty-vi-was-demoted-for-destroying-government-property-among-other-offenses\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesty-VI.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">1979 Marine mascot Chesty VI was demoted for destroying government property, among other offenses<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Chesty VI was demoted for chewing up the punching bag, and received 14 days extra duty for biting the two corporals, according to the charge sheets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecruit Chesty XVI recently began training to replace the retiring Lance Cpl. Chesty XV,\u201d according to a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, Chesty XV will help the young pup along as is tradition. He has been serving in the role since 2018, and his predecessor, Chesty XIV, was the mascot for five years before that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/19\/meet-chesty-xv-the-new-marine-corps-mascot\/\" target=\"_blank\">starting in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When his training is complete, Chesty XVI will report to the Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., and is expected to perform in drill ceremonies and parades with the Marine
