ABOARD A US MILITARY AIRCRAFT \u2014 The Pittsburgh synagogue shooter who is accused of firing on citizens gathered to worship Saturday is \u201cthe poorest excuse for a man you could ever come up with,\u201d Defense Secretary Jim Mattis <\/a>said Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleven people were killed and six wounded when accused shooter Robert Bowers, 46, fired upon them as they gathered for a bris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shooting is tough \u201con all of us who believe in freedom of religion as one of our most fundamental rights that our country was founded on,\u201d Mattis told reporters traveling with him to the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis individual \u2014 I won\u2019t even call him a man \u2014 he\u2019s the poorest excuse for a man you could ever come up with. Who would use a weapon in a house of worship, on unarmed innocent people and even shoot four policemen, then surrender himself,\u201d Mattis said. \u201cThis is a coward. He is not a man by any definition that we use in the Department of Defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
