{"id":60512,"date":"2021-12-09T00:34:17","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T00:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/12\/09\/coast-guard-diver-pulls-body-from-car-above-niagara-falls\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:26:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T11:26:35","slug":"coast-guard-diver-pulls-body-from-car-above-niagara-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/12\/09\/coast-guard-diver-pulls-body-from-car-above-niagara-falls\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard diver pulls body from car above Niagara Falls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. \u2014 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/11\/07\/troopers-helicopter-rescues-7-iced-in-at-remote-alaska-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coast Guard<\/a> diver lowered from the sky Wednesday braved frigid rapids to get to a car submerged in water near the brink of Niagara Falls, only to find it was too late to rescue the driver trapped inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The diver was lowered from a hovering helicopter, climbed into the car and pulled out the body of its lone occupant, a woman in her 60s, officials from New York\u2019s State Park Police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both were then hoisted back up to the helicopter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was an incredible job by the Coast Guard,\u201d Park Police Capt. Christopher Rola said at a news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was unclear how the car got into the Niagara River. Witnesses reported seeing it floating near a pedestrian bridge, where it was believed to have gone in. Roads in the area were slippery as a light snow fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Photos and videos taken by bystanders showed the car almost completely submerged with only part of the roof and open trunk hatch visible through the whitewater in the early afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police used a drone to determine it was occupied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities said the woman lived in the area. Onlookers watched as emergency crews prepared to try to pull the vehicle from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rola said the State Park department\u2019s swift-water rescue teams
