{"id":60704,"date":"2019-09-16T18:31:12","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T18:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/09\/16\/anger-as-va-evicts-lawmakers-from-medical-center-offices\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T10:55:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T10:55:34","slug":"anger-as-va-evicts-lawmakers-from-medical-center-offices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2019\/09\/16\/anger-as-va-evicts-lawmakers-from-medical-center-offices\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger as VA evicts lawmakers from medical center offices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several members of Congress from Florida are accusing the Veterans Affairs officials of trying to limit oversight into department operations by evicting them from offices at local VA medical centers, limiting their ability <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/06\/25\/whistleblowers-testify-that-fear-retribution-are-still-widespread-at-va\/\" target=_blank>to interact with veterans<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/09\/26\/wilkie-touts-a-calmer-reformed-va-in-his-first-congressional-test\/\" target=_blank>VA Secretary Robert Wilkie<\/a> insists there is no truth to that claim, and that the move is being made to provide more space for veterans medical services. He accused lawmakers of making \u201cmisleading public statements\u201d about the moves in an effort to create unneeded controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dispute began last week, when <a href=\"http:\/\/caucus.militarytimes.com\/speaker\/brian-mast\/#.XX_OlShKhPY\" target=_blank>Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla.<\/a>, went on Fox News to complain that he had been told to clean out his satellite congressional office at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center by December, so officials could reclaim the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/09\/13\/ant-infestation-at-georgia-veterans-facility-becomes-the-latest-health-care-scandal-for-va\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_357351745868.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Ant infestation at Georgia veterans facility becomes the latest health care scandal for VA<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A dying veteran was bit more than 100 times by the insects before staff made any changes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mast, an Army veteran who lost both his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan in 2010, blasted the move as an attempt to cut down on lawmakers\u2019 visibility of potential problems at the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to flip that place upside down in order to change the whole climate of what\u2019s going on there,\u201d he told the network. \u201cAnd if the people in charge aren\u2019t willing to do that, then they\u2019re not doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fellow Florida Democratic Reps. Darren Soto and Stephanie Murphy said they both have been given similar reasons for VA shutting down their offices at the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center. They have also requested top VA officials reconsider the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said six lawmakers with offices at local medical centers have been told their spaces will be reclaimed, as part of an effort to \u201cmaximize clinical space.\u201d In a letter to Mast last week, Wilkie criticized the congressman\u2019s reaction as off-base and unhelpful to veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou falsely implied that you could not conduct congressional oversight and constituent services from your district or Washington-based offices,\u201d Wilkie wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/08\/30\/va-secretary-wants-answers-on-string-of-west-virginia-patient-deaths-as-a-second-homicide-is-confirmed\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6303283633_8a0ef0717d_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA secretary wants answers on string of West Virginia patient deaths as a second homicide is confirmed<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As many as 11 patients may have been victims of homicide.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are one of only six members of Congress who currently have office space in a VA facility. None of the other 529 members, all of whom conduct oversight and constituent services, are making such demands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers conceded that VA is not required to make the space available to them, but said the eviction runs counter to publicly stated goals of transparency and reform at the department. Wilkie dismissed those concerns, saying the department \u201cis more transparent and accountable than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is likely to come before the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee, which in recent months has raised its own complaints about a lack of cooperation from VA officials in providing information on key programs and personnel. VA leaders have disputed that, saying they have provided all of they documentation available upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mast and other lawmakers said they are also
