{"id":62666,"date":"2018-09-21T19:53:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T19:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/09\/21\/eod-sailor-cleared-a-daisy-chained-minefield-during-a-10-hour-firefight-with-isis\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:41:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T11:41:43","slug":"eod-sailor-cleared-a-daisy-chained-minefield-during-a-10-hour-firefight-with-isis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2018\/09\/21\/eod-sailor-cleared-a-daisy-chained-minefield-during-a-10-hour-firefight-with-isis\/","title":{"rendered":"EOD sailor cleared a daisy-chained minefield during 10-hour firefight with ISIS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten hours is an absolute eternity in a firefight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/hero\/401089\" target=_blank>Explosive Ordnance Disposal 1st Class Jeffrey Thomas<\/a> experienced over the course of Oct. 20 and 21, 2016, as his convoy conducted clearance operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas, a native of California, continuously maneuvered during the fight under a barrage of small arms, rocket-propelled grenades and mortar fire to engage the enemy and clear a path for the convoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the convoy was finally ordered to break contact and make their way out of the kill zone, the lead vehicle rolled over one of seven daisy-chained improvised explosive devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"627\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/170920-N-FV739-038.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99037\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/170920-N-FV739-038.JPG.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/170920-N-FV739-038.JPG.jpg?resize=300,188 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/170920-N-FV739-038.JPG.jpg?resize=768,482 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">170920-N-FV739-038\nExplosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 1st Class Jeffrey Thomas stands at attention alongside Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Veloicaza).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The massive explosion killed the EOD supervisor, Thomas&#8217; friend and mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Realizing the dire situation, the sailor assigned to Coronado-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3 exited his vehicle and hastily got to work, sweeping the rest of the area for explosives despite a hail of enemy rounds, RPGs and mortars impacting around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clearing a path of additional explosives allowed medics enough time to reach the disabled vehicles and evacuate casualties. Still exposed to enemy fire, Thomas guided the convoy out of the intricate mine field and safely to a medical evacuation landing zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one that was present on the 20th of October knew better than Jeff the dangers he was facing,\u201d Cmdr. Geoff Townsend, the commanding officer of EODMU 3, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=102538\" target=_blank>2017 Navy release<\/a>. \u201cAfter the EOD supervisor, a friend and mentor, was mortally wounded, Jeff knowingly exposed himself to hazards in order to protect the lives of his teammates and brothers in arms, and secure a MEDEVAC for his wounded teammate. His actions that day saved the lives of his teammates and exceeded all measures of selflessness and devotion to his country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas was awarded the Silver Star, the nation\u2019s third highest award for valor, for his actions during the seemingly endless firefight with ISIS forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was presented the award on Sept. 20, 2017, by Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Bill Moran onboard Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday we recognize the heroic actions of individuals and the legacy of their teammates,&#8221; Moran said at the ceremony. \u201cThis recognition is well deserved, and it\u2019s an acknowledgment of bravery, training, and dedication to team and country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That ceremony also included a Bronze Star with Combat &#8220;V&#8221; award presented to Lt. Morgan Dahl for actions during the same firefight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas enlisted in the Navy in August 2010 and was promoted to a first class in December 2016.
