BEIJING (AP) \u2014 Chinese military forces<\/a> are holding exercises near Taiwan in response to a visit by a U.S. congressional delegation to the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drills in the area of the Taiwan Strait are a \u201cnecessary measure to safeguard national sovereignty,\u201d China\u2019s Defense Ministry said in an announcement Tuesday that gave no details on the timing, participants and location of the exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It said the \u201cjoint war preparedness patrol<\/a>\u201d by the Eastern Theater Command was prompted by the \u201cseriously incorrect words and actions of relevant countries over the issue of Taiwan\u201d and the actions of those advocating the self-governing island\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said China considers the delegation\u2019s visit a \u201cserious violation\u201d of U.S. commitments not to have formal relations with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChina is firmly opposed to that and has made solemn representations to the U.S.,\u201d Wang said at a daily briefing Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll risky and provocative actions against China\u2019s reunification is like an ant trying to topple over a giant tree and is doomed to fail,\u201d Wang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
