{"id":62772,"date":"2016-05-05T21:07:07","date_gmt":"2016-05-05T21:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/05\/05\/110-year-old-wwii-veteran-from-louisiana-dies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:01:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:01:31","slug":"110-year-old-wwii-veteran-from-louisiana-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2016\/05\/05\/110-year-old-wwii-veteran-from-louisiana-dies\/","title":{"rendered":"110-year-old WWII veteran from Louisiana dies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEW ORLEANS \u2014 A 110-year-old Louisiana man who enlisted in the Army during World War II to serve his country has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple media outlets described him as the country&#8217;s oldest World War II veteran but that could not be independently confirmed.\u00a0Local television station KPLC-TV in Lake Charles reported that Frank Levingston died Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levingston was born Nov. 13, 1905, and grew up in northern Louisiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ABC News reported that he enlisted in the Army on Oct. 6, 1942, less than a year after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and launched the U.S. into the war raging in Europe and the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He felt the obligation to give to the country whatever he possibly could, and he was very excited about it,&#8221; his nephew Lee Levingston told ABC News. &#8220;He gave it his very best.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, Levingston was part of a group of veterans who traveled to Washington, D.C., for a ceremony marking the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the trip, Levingston was honored at a ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635851055375858562-pearl-harbor-remembran-7-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635851055375858562-pearl-harbor-remembran-7-jpg.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635851055375858562-pearl-harbor-remembran-7-jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635851055375858562-pearl-harbor-remembran-7-jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635851055375858562-pearl-harbor-remembran-7-jpg.jpg?resize=1024,682 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635851055375858562-pearl-harbor-remembran-7-jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A soldier lays a wreath with Frank Levingston of Lake Charles, La. Levingston is 110-years old and is believed to be the oldest World War II veteran in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Daniel Woolfolk\/Staff<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">District Attorney John DeRosier, speaking at the ceremony, said when he looked at Levingston, he didn&#8217;t see a 110-year-old man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I see a young black soldier in green utilities with worn combat boots, scampering across the sand on those beaches,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levingston served as a private during the Allied invasion of Italy in September 1943\u00a0and did a tour in North Africa, the American Press reported. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and spent much of his post-military life in the cement finishing business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never married or had children of his own but his nephew said he took great pride in taking care of his siblings&#8217; children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levingston&#8217;s funeral is scheduled for next Tuesday in his
