VA officials don\u2019t have estimates on how much veterans could get in payouts and how much the changes could cost, or even when the work could be complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The link between burn pits \u2014 used to dispose of excess equipment, human waste and a host of other toxic materials \u2014 and serious medical conditions has been widely assumed for years, but not conclusively linked to a specific set of health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/05\/26\/millions-of-vets-could-get-new-benefits-under-toxic-exposure-legislation-but-can-it-become-law\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image002.jpg_8441de.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Millions of vets could get new benefits under toxic exposure legislation. But can it become law?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A pair of bills dealing with burn pit exposure, Agent Orange illnesses and more are slowly working through Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 250,000 veterans have signed up for VA\u2019s Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry, designed to track illnesses related to burn pit exposure and ease access to veterans benefits. But advocates have complained that tool is limited, and the actual number of veterans suffering from burn pit conditions is likely several times that figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ve also pushed for more liberal granting of disability claims connected to burn pits, noting that insufficient monitoring of the smoke has led to numerous questions about which troops were exposed and poisoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, VA Secretary Denis McDonough ordered an internal review into the issue, promising to speed up work on the already decade-old problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, in a press conference with reporters, he promised that officials are \u201cattacking this issue with urgency\u201d and said it has been a frequent topic of conversation with White House officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt breaks all of our hearts that we have veterans who suffer because of the service they carried out on our behalf,\u201d he said. \u201cIt makes me particularly saddened to know we have veterans with terminal diagnosis. We are going to spare nothing to generate answers for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A day earlier, at a press conference on Capitol Hill, veterans advocates praised recent congressional efforts to address the issue but also acknowledged fatalism about the slow pace of reaction to numerous deaths and serious illnesses over the last 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore than 8 in 10 veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan say they were exposed to burn pits, and more than 80 percent of those say they\u2019re suffering some health effects from that today,\u201d said Tom Porter, executive vice president of government affairs at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. \u201cWe have to do this, and we have to do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough did not offer a timeline for when veterans might start seeing new benefits from the move announced Thursday. He promised to \u201crespect the rulemaking process,\u201d which can take several years in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress may not wait that long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee on Wednesday unveiled plans to make 23 respiratory conditions and rare cancers contracted by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans automatically eligible for disability benefits, and expect to advance the legislation next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/05\/27\/va-to-start-processing-vietnam-vets-claims-for-conditions-newly-linked-to-agent-orange-poisoning\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP6210251309.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to start processing Vietnam vets\u2019 claims for conditions newly linked to Agent Orange poisoning<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Individuals suffering from bladder cancer, hypothyroidism, and Parkinsonism will be able to receive disability payments for their conditions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Veterans Affairs Committee members later in the day unanimously advanced a similar plan with fewer presumptive conditions but a similar approach to granting wider benefits access to all veterans who served near burn pits. Chairman Jon Tester, D-Mont., has said he hopes the two chambers can pass a final compromise plan by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they do, the VA work may form the procedural backbone for implementing those changes. VA\u2019s announcement noted that the conditions being reviewed \u201cmay include asthma, sinusitis, and rhinitis\u201d and will cover \u201cmilitary service in Southwest Asia, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials also pledged to engage veterans advocates in coming months on how to shape the new benefits rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the beginning of this effort,\u201d McDonough said. \u201cWe will continue to work aggressively at identifying the available science \u2026 to make sure
