But they are worried another setback could happen before the next deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have four months now to build, to test, to train, to deal with the infrastructure issues,\u201d said Rep. Susie Lee, D-Nev., and chairwoman of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee\u2019s panel on technology. \u201cWe hope you get this right. This is an incredibly important project not just for VA, but for health care across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three weeks ago, VA leaders announced they would postpone the planned March deployment of the department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2019\/07\/31\/va-migrates-health-records-for-235-million-veterans-ahead-of-integration-with-the-militarys-system\/\" target=_blank>new health records system<\/a> to the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Washington state. That step was to be a key early test for the 10-year, $16 billion system overhaul designed to bring VA medical records in line with military files.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/02\/11\/va-delays-launch-of-new-electronic-health-records-system\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fed-nicole-data-technologiejpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA delays launch of new electronic health records system<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA is delaying the deployment of its new medical records system to ensure that it will operate within the current VA IT infrastructure.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move initially drew tepid acceptance from members of Congress who urged responsible progress with the massive undertaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this week, several lawmakers have expressed concerns that the delay seemed to come without warning, suggesting the department and health contractors haven\u2019t done a good enough job communicating with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA month ago I was told by Secretary (Robert) Wilkie that everything was on track with the electronic health record modernization modernization rollout with no anticipated issues, and just a week later we were told that the go-live was going to be postponed until July,\u201d said committee Chairman Mark Takano, D-Calif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA has a responsibility to operate with transparency and accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials overseeing the records work on Thursday blamed the delay on infrastructure and training concerns, but expressed confidence they\u2019ll be able to move ahead with work by July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already more than 23 million veteran health records have been transferred into the new system, according to Travis Dalton, president of Cerner Government Services, whose parent company is building the new records system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIncredible progress is being made,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are supportive of the revised go-live schedule and the decision to take additional time for testing and end-user training. We heard the advice from this committee to take the time to get it right, and listened to the provider community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA Assistant Secretary for Enterprise Integration Melissa Glynn, the latest department official overseeing the work, expressed similar confidence in the new schedule and the ability field the updated electronic medical records system nationwide in the next seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in a preview of upcoming oversight work on the transition, VA Deputy Inspector General David Case told lawmakers that his office has concerns that department hiring efforts have not kept pace with staffing needs regarding the changes and \u201cpatient care could be put at risk\u201d when the new systems are deployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2019\/06\/12\/can-a-new-office-foster-health-record-cooperation-in-time\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div records compatible in time?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs have plans for a new office to facilitate cooperation in the roll out of their electronic health record systems.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center officials told the inspector general\u2019s office that they expect as much as a 30 percent drop in staff productivity for 18 months after the new systems are put in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House has requested $2.6 billion in new funding for the project in fiscal 2021, nearly half of that total for new equipment and infrastructure related to the records upgrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As lawmakers consider that budget request in coming months, Lee warned VA leaders, they\u2019ll also expect detailed plans on ways to
