{"id":64330,"date":"2020-09-10T15:47:47","date_gmt":"2020-09-10T15:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/09\/10\/famed-iwo-jima-flags-at-national-marine-corps-museum-for-2-weeks-as-it-reopens\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:12:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:12:11","slug":"famed-iwo-jima-flags-at-national-marine-corps-museum-for-2-weeks-as-it-reopens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/2020\/09\/10\/famed-iwo-jima-flags-at-national-marine-corps-museum-for-2-weeks-as-it-reopens\/","title":{"rendered":"Famed Iwo Jima flags at National Museum of the Marine Corps for 2 weeks as it reopens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After having to shut down for several months because of the COVID-19 crisis, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmcmuseum.com\/\" target=_blank>National Museum of the Marine Corps<\/a> welcomed visitors back Tuesday with a limited-time viewing of the two flags raised on Iwo Jima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World War II <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/03\/03\/two-iwo-jima-marine-veterans-99-and-97-meet-on-75th-anniversary-of-the-battle\/\" target=_blank>battle for Iwo Jima <\/a>saw some 70,000 U.S. Marines and sailors invade the Japanese island, with about 7,000 killed in action and another 20,000 wounded. Taking the island from Japan provided an important strategic victory in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">February marked the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/02\/20\/what-if-the-navy-and-marine-corps-had-bypassed-iwo-jima\/\" target=_blank>75th anniversary<\/a> of the famous assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battle was immortalized in a photograph of Marines and a Navy corpsman working against the wind to raise an American flag on Mount Suribachi. The iconic photo captured the second flag raising in two days. The flags will be on display for only two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/02\/23\/iwo-jima-the-story-behind-alan-wood-and-the-famous-flag-on-mount-suribachi\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_4502230115.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Iwo Jima: The story behind Alan Wood and the famous flag on Mount Suribachi<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The time and the place were prophetic. It was early 1945, and the place was Pearl Harbor, site of the surprise attack that plunged the United States into World War II.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday is the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which makes the museum\u2019s \u201cTerror Strikes\u201d section of the extension of \u201cLegacy Walk\u201d especially timely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat section speaks to the events of 9\/11 and the Corps&#8217; involvement,\u201d Gwenn Adams, public affairs chief for the Marine Corps Museum, said in a Thursday email to Marine Corps Times. \u201cWe have a piece of rubble from the Pentagon and an I-beam from the World Trade Centers. In previous years, when those items were on temporary display in our exit corridor many people would visit on 9\/11 to pay their respects. One lady returns each year and lays flowers because she can\u2019t yet bring herself to go to New York.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the museum\u2019s visitors come for many reasons, Adams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome to connect with their past, some to better understand what their veteran loved one experienced, some to experience U.S. and world history as seen through the eyes of Marines and some just to see the weapons or the Iwo Jima flag,\u201d Adams said. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you how many times visitors have told us, \u2018Thank you! I now understand what my husband\/wife\/father\/mother\/brother\/sister (fill in the blank) went through,\u2019 or \u2018This is the first time we\u2019ve ever heard these stories from him\/her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Museum officials announced that strict safety protocols have been put in place to keep visitors and staff from potentially spreading the virus. Face coverings and social distancing are required and museum staff will be working to continually clean and sanitize surfaces. Hand sanitation stations are positioned throughout the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several of the museum\u2019s exhibits will be closed, including those with interactive elements like the children\u2019s gallery and other play areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps museum, located near Quantico, Virginia, also is working on new exhibits and galleries remembering the years from 1976 through the global war on terror. The galleries will highlight Marine action in Somalia, Beirut, Desert Shield\/Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The flags will be on display for
