Army says \u2018maybe\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s nothing like cracking open a cold beer after a long day at work. But soldiers who reside in the barracks at some assignments have been limited from doing just that by Army policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/army\/comments\/vgw4ux\/sma_looking_for_your_input_improving_army_culture\/?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=ios_app&#038;utm_name=iossmf\" target=\"_blank\">Sergeant Major of the Army took to Reddit<\/a> to ask questions about improving culture, including one that hinted at the possibility of removing barriers for soldiers to drink alcohol in the barracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army hasn\u2019t made any changes yet, but Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael A. Grinston <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/army-alcohol-barracks-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Task &amp; Purpose<\/a> that the branch\u2019s approach to alcohol is under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe intent, first right off the bat, was [to] ask ourselves \u2018do we have the right culture that we want in the Army for alcohol?\u2019\u201d Grinston asked. \u201cI think that was a fair question, and I think the majority of the individuals said \u2018yes, we need to take this on and do something about it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drinking regulation enforcement has largely been left up to individual commands, a service spokesman told Army Times. However, according to enlisted leaders, limitations don\u2019t appear to prevent excessive drinking or foster a culture of mindful drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExcept for prohibition of alcohol consumption in Initial Entry Training barracks, there is no Army policy regarding how much alcohol a Soldier can possess in the barracks; however, some units have established policies locally,\u201d Army spokesman Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Hewitt told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, at Fort Bliss, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.army.mil\/bliss\/application\/files\/2516\/1765\/1956\/11._Command_Policy_Letter_11_-_Barracks_Policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Command Policy Letter #11<\/a> \u2014 Barracks Policy says that only soldiers older than 21 in assigned barracks rooms are allowed to keep one 750ml bottle of wine or liquor, with ABVs above 10%. That\u2019s a standard fifth. Beer is limited to 144 ounces, or a standard 12-pack. Wine with an ABV lower than 10% is limited to about five bottles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Quitugua Jr. of the Army Chemical Corps at Fort Leavenworth said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/us\/2022-07-01\/army-sex-assault-harassment-suicide-6520975.html\" target=\"_blank\">during a three-day conference<\/a> with the Army\u2019s top enlisted leaders the first week of July that he thinks giving soldiers more agency in the barracks will allow them to develop better drinking habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSoldiers are saying, \u2018Because I know I can only keep this amount of alcohol in my barracks, when I\u2019m at the bar I will drink as much as I can as fast as I can because I can\u2019t continue to drink at my barracks because you just don\u2019t want me to have enough in there,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the services, soldiers had the highest number of hospitalizations for alcohol-related issues between 2009 and 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/238762\/study_prompts_re_emphasis_on_alcohol_abuse_treatment_options\" target=\"_blank\">according to a 2020 Army release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe truth is that many Soldiers don\u2019t follow those rules which results in risky drinking patterns and occasions,\u201d said Dr. Cheryl Owen, the regional manager for Substance Use Disorders Clinical Care at Regional Health Command Europe. \u201cA subset of those folks won\u2019t be able to or can\u2019t follow those rules even if they try.
