The writers are not employed by Military Times, and the views expressed here do not necessarily represent those of Military Times or its editorial staff.<\/i><span class=\"aimFont\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br\/><br\/>When 19-year-old Purple Heart recipient Marine Cpl. Samuel &#8220;Lee&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-purple-heart-20170213-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-purple-heart-20170213-story.html\">Anderson<\/a>\u00a0was injured by a land mine after intense fighting, he was transported back to the U.S. and likely did what most red-blooded Americans did after the war: He had a beer.<br\/><br\/> Compare that to the story of Army Sgt. Monica Lin\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/recipient.php?recipientid=3717\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/23547346\/ns\/us_news-military\/t\/female-medic-earns-silver-star-afghan-war\/#.WMravhLyvJ9\">Brown<\/a>\u00a0(then a private first class), who was awarded the Silver Star for saving the lives of five of her fellow soldiers when a roadside bomb exploded amid a convoy of Humvees on patrol. After the bomb struck one of the vehicles, Brown grabbed her aid bag, ran through enemy gunfire to reach her wounded comrades, and used her own body to shield them from falling mortars.<br\/><br\/> Like Anderson, Brown was barely 19 years old when she was in battle. But unlike Anderson, if Brown had chosen to partake in the American pastime of drinking a beer after coming home, she might have been prosecuted for underage drinking.<br\/><br\/> The difference? Anderson fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. Brown was in Afghanistan in 2007. <br\/><br\/>Prior to the 1980s, military leaders had more leeway to allow on-base drinking under 21, and during World War II uniformed military personnel were routinely\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/allaboutbeer.com\/article\/not-again-yes-lower-the-drinking-age-diatribe-no-119\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/allaboutbeer.com\/article\/not-again-yes-lower-the-drinking-age-diatribe-no-119\/\">served in pretty much any bar<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S.<b><i> <\/i><\/b>In those days, military commanders abroad were more concerned with killing Nazis and frequenting French\u00a0<i>tavernes<\/i>\u00a0than obsessing over the official military drinking age.<br\/><br\/> Today&#8217;s 18-year-old service members can do almost anything under the sun \u2014 get married, vote, buy a house, go to adult prison, smoke a cigarette \u2014 but they can\u2019t have a cold one after &#8220;shield[ing] wounded [soldiers] from falling brass and enemy fire,&#8221; as Sgt. Brown\u2019s Silver Star citation reads.\u00a0It\u2019s well past time to once again allow troops under age 21 to enjoy a brew.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;If you\u2019re willing to die for your country, you should be able to drink a beer&#8221; is a good sound bite, but it\u2019s also good policy. We give those who enlist (as young as age 17) weapons and teach them how to kill people\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the ultimate power and responsibility \u2014 yet simultaneously agonize over them so much as touching alcohol. This makes no sense.<br\/><br\/> Opponents argue that allowing underage military drinking would risk a dangerous mix of alcohol and gun-toting troops. But the military\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/news\/2013\/09\/17\/this-is-why-most-military-personnel-are-disarmed-on-military-bases-and-its-not-clintons-fault\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/news\/2013\/09\/17\/this-is-why-most-military-personnel-are-disarmed-on-military-bases-and-its-not-clintons-fault\/\">severely restricts<\/a>\u00a0the access service members have to firearms on base, and past experience with on-base drinking under the age of 21 actually\u00a0<i>supports<\/i>\u00a0the idea of allowing younger troops to imbibe.<br\/><br\/> Back in the day, active-duty troops under 21 could drink responsibly on base.\u00a0Even when Congress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/10\/2683\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/10\/2683\">changed the law in the 1980s<\/a>\u00a0to require American military bases to adhere to local drinking age laws (which in a number of states had increased to 21 after experiments with lowering the age in the 1970s), bases located within 50 miles of Canada or Mexico continued to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/military-drinking-age-3354195\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/military-drinking-age-3354195\">permit 18-year-olds to drink<\/a>. <br\/><br\/>Although no branch of the military takes advantage of the 50-mile rule today, commanders overseas occasionally allow underage drinking for &#8220;special circumstances,&#8221; such as the recognized birthday of one of the military branches.\u00a0And in 2007, the Marine Corps\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/893871\/change-1-to-mco-170022ealcoholic-beverage-control-in-the-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/893871\/change-1-to-mco-170022ealcoholic-beverage-control-in-the-marine-corps\/\">loosened its rules<\/a>\u00a0further, allowing 18-year-old Marines to drink in foreign ports, so long as local laws permit it.\u00a0<br\/><br\/> In other words, we\u2019ve been here before. We\u2019ve allowed 18-year-old service members to drink, and it didn\u2019t trigger a military crisis or lead to booze-infused gun violence on military bases.<br\/><br\/> Forbidding off-base drinking makes even less sense, and it would be easy to implement a system that allowed it. In recent years, a\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/should-underage-soldiers-be-allowed-to-drink-alcohol-203\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/should-underage-soldiers-be-allowed-to-drink-alcohol-203\">wave\u00a0<\/a>of\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/n-h-bill-would-lower-gi-drinking-age-to-18-for-active-duty-troops-1.41701#.WMqwehLyvJ8\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/n-h-bill-would-lower-gi-drinking-age-to-18-for-active-duty-troops-1.41701#.WMqwehLyvJ8\">state legislation<\/a>\u00a0has cropped up that would give military members the green light to drink at 18. While no such laws have passed, they show that the issue is gaining attention. <br\/><br\/>All U.S. armed service members have a ready form of identification: The Common Access Card. Congress could pass a law allowing service members to present their CAC cards, rather than a driver\u2019s license, whenever they walk into a bar and want to order a drink.<br\/><br\/>Both common sense and history show that 18-year-old troops are sufficiently responsible to drink. If we entrust soldiers like Sgt. Brown to wield a weapon in defense of our precious freedoms, it\u2019s well past time we also let them wield a beer.<br\/><br\/><img decoding=\"async\" data-alignment=\"center\" data-object-id=\"0000015b-44be-de13-a95f-7cbf0c300000\" data-type=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/snagfilms-a.akamaihd.net\/aa\/67\/b4c4047c476e9144ccda97ecdbc2\/arm-drinking-commentary.jpg\"\/><figcaption> <span>C.
