{"id":65451,"date":"2020-03-23T03:33:41","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T03:33:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/23\/coronavirus-pops-up-across-the-fleet-as-navy-stops-identifying-ships-with-covid-19-cases\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:41:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:41:18","slug":"coronavirus-pops-up-across-the-fleet-as-navy-stops-identifying-ships-with-covid-19-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/home\/left-column\/2020\/03\/23\/coronavirus-pops-up-across-the-fleet-as-navy-stops-identifying-ships-with-covid-19-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"As COVID-19 spreads across fleet, Navy stops identifying ships with positive cases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the number of positive coronavirus cases mount in the greater San Diego region, the Navy\u2019s U.S. Pacific Fleet announced it would forego naming ships sailors who test positive are assigned to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two more positive cases surfaced Friday, followed by five more Saturday, but the service would only specify whether the personnel in question belonged to different commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese Sailors are currently isolated off ship and restricted in movement in accordance with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines,\u201d a U.S. Pacific Fleet release stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the service indicated it will only be providing the number of positive cases and region in which they arise, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/military\/story\/2020-03-20\/navy-says-it-will-no-longer-name-ships-with-covid-19-cases-as-virus-spreads-on-waterfront\" target=_blank>San Diego Union Tribune first reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to the change, the Navy was providing the precise commands of positive cases. Two sailors from the amphibious assault ship Boxer, for example, tested positive last week and are currently in self-quarantine in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cU.S. Pacific Fleet commanders and commanding officers are committed to taking every measure possible to protect the health of our force,\u201d U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe remain in close coordination with state and federal authorities, and public health authorities to ensure the well-being of our personnel and local population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, the Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/2020\/03\/20\/navy-orders-commands-to-take-all-measures-to-avoid-formations-mass-gatherings\/\" target=_blank>ordered commands across the fleet <\/a>to take every possible measure to avoid large formations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unit leadership has been instructed to \u201cremain out of congregate settings, avoid mass gatherings and maintain six feet or two-meter distance from others when possible,\u201d Lt. James Adams, U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesperson, told Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s response follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/after-discovering-a-sailor-with-coronavirus-the-us-navy-crowded-dozens-into-one-room\">a ProPublica report last week<\/a> that revealed apparent negligence on the part of Boxer leadership, who, instead of using available outdoor spaces, reportedly crowded approximately 80 senior enlisted sailors and officers into tight quarters aboard the San Diego-based ship \u2014 2 to 4 feet apart \u2014 for a 30-minute update on the continually escalating crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDefinitely not enough room to maintain appropriate distance,\u201d one frustrated sailor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/after-discovering-a-sailor-with-coronavirus-the-us-navy-crowded-dozens-into-one-room\">told ProPublica<\/a>. \u201cPeople are wondering why we gathered in a room contradictory to CDC guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, San Diego and the U.S. Pacific Fleet are far from isolated examples. Positive cases of COVID-19 were popping up throughout the fleet this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Three assigned to Naval Special Warfare test positive from Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three first-class petty officers assigned to Naval Special Warfare tested positive on March 21 for COVID-19, Naval Special Warfare Command Public Affairs confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trio were reportedly training at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor when they contracted virus.
