That\u2019s one step below the highest alert level for disease outbreaks, HPCON Delta, which means that the risk is severe and there has been widespread community transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USFK implemented HPCON Charlie for the greater Seoul metropolitan area and several other areas of South Korea on Saturday, but announced that HPCON Charlie would go into effect across the entire peninsula on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have complete confidence the ROK government and KCDC will suppress this outbreak and stop the spread,\u201d Gen. Robert Abrams, USFK commander, said in a news release. \u201cBut we must balance the overall health, safety and protection of the force with mission accomplishment, and that means immediately raising our health protection conditions and preventive control measures now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must protect the force to protect the mission,\u201d Abrams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/06\/11\/two-usfk-service-members-test-positive-after-arriving-in-s-korea-from-us\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20054386083758.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Two USFK service members test positive for COVID-19 after arriving in S. Korea from US<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">So far, only five active-duty USFK service members have tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, only mission-essential personnel will report to duty as others work remotely, and off-installation travel is only permitted in cases of official and necessary duties, USFK said. Exceptions require approval from an O-6 or equivalent civilian supervisor within the chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, USFK has barred groups larger than 15 people from seated dining at off-installation restaurants, bars, clubs and other social settings for all USFK-affiliated personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Priority screening is available for mission essential personnel who have been to Area II(+), that is the greater Seoul metropolitan region and nine other surrounding districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 300 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Sunday in South Korea, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/coronavirus-pandemic-08-16-20-intl\/h_39b450ba7f0df05ebc90987796316647\">CNN reported<\/a>, citing the South Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, USFK announced Monday that five USFK service members had tested positive for COVID-19 upon their arrival in South Korea from the U.S. between Aug. 1 and Aug. 15. They are now at isolation facilities at Camp Humphreys or Osan Air Base for confirmed COVID cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 23-year-old USFK soldier stationed at Camp Carroll was the very first U.S. service member to test positive for COVID-19 in February. He was declared virus-free in April after spending 49 days in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USFK has said that the command has not experienced an internal positive COVID case since April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Effective immediately, if your unit has designated you as mission essential and you have visited the new Area II (+) since Aug. 12, you have priority screening for the next 36 hours through the COVID Hotline.
