Joel Babbitt \u2014 program executive officer for SOF Warrior and all things individual gear for Special Operations Command \u2014 spelled out the evaluation and fielding plan between now and 2025 that looks to seriously upgrade individual shooters on Wednesday during the annual Special Operations Forces Industry Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PEO has already put out a request for proposals for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/11\/06\/the-army-is-looking-for-a-new-machine-gun-and-the-marines-might-get-a-new-caliber-too\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lightweight Medium Machinegun<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/01\/24\/heres-one-of-the-big-guns-competing-to-be-socoms-next-lightweight-medium-machine-gun\/\" target=\"_blank\">LMG-M<\/a>, and expects to field the .338 Norma Magnum weapon by early fiscal year 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/05\/07\/these-marines-will-test-a-lighter-polymer-cased-50-caliber-round\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-.50-caliber.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">These Marines will test a lighter, polymer-cased .50 caliber round<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The case, links and ammo box are changing to lighten the load.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The .338NM round is getting a lot of attention. It\u2019s going to be ammo fielded for all of SOCOM\u2019s forces as a machine gun and sniper round and for the Army in their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/03\/13\/special-ops-snipers-will-soon-shoot-this-new-rifle-that-can-fire-three-different-calibers\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Advanced Sniper Rifle<\/a> program, Babbitt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The colonel said that shooters are seeing better effects on target from the .338NM than from the .50 caliber. There\u2019s better penetration and accuracy, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re killing, not just suppressing the target,\u201d Babbitt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the weight savings is considerable. A .50 caliber machine gun or the M2, \u201cMa Deuce\u201d can weigh nearly 90 pounds. The prototypes they\u2019re seeing for the LMG-M are tipping the scales at 22-25lbs, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat you\u2019re doing is putting .50 caliber effects in an M240B,\u201d Babbitt said, in reference to the current medium 7.62mm machine gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The colonel said some of the test shooters are requesting a single shot switch on the machine gun because they\u2019re hitting the target on the first shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the velocity of the round is doing more damage than the current medium machine gun can manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou cannot only rip up the enemy infantry but you can rip up the Armored Personnel Carrier they rode in on as well,\u201d Babbitt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on the .50 caliber side, Babbitt said progress with the .50 caliber polymer casing and linkages has considerably improved how they can use that round, especially in their small helicopters, known as \u201clittle birds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military Times has previously reported on .50 caliber polymer case development, an effort being led by the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new casing uses polymer instead of brass, and nylon instead of metal linkages as well as a polymer ammo case. Those moves have cut the weight by more than 20 pounds. It\u2019s still under evaluation this year but Marine officials recently said they expect it to field to the joint force by early 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That weight savings has a direct impact on the \u201clittle birds.\u201d That\u2019s because right now pilots have to choose between running on three-quarters fuel and full ammunition or three-quarters ammunition and full fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with the polymer option, Babbitt said, those helicopters can go fully fueled and loaded which translates to an extra 30 minutes loiter time on target and more bullets in the bandolier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or, as the colonel put it, \u201cSo, you get all the bang and all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snipers are seeing a bump up in their capabilities. SOCOM expects to procure the 6.5mm Creedmoor round to replace the 7.62mm sniper support rifles they currently have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, Babbitt said, puts primary sniper rifle accuracy in the support weapon. The 6.5mm round gives shooters 1.5 times the range of the current 7.62mm, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, Barrett Firearms Manufacturing won the contract to provide the Advanced Sniper rifle, a main gun, bolt-action weapon that can be configured to fire three different rounds, depending on the mission &#8211; .338 NM, .300 NM and
