Individuals enrolled in traditional in-person classes receive the full financial benefit, while students in online-only classes get half of that housing stipend.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/11\/22\/student-veterans-face-huge-cuts-in-housing-stipends-if-congress-doesnt-act-soon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ally.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Student veterans face huge cuts in housing stipends if Congress doesn\u2019t act soon<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Emergency authorities which prevented students from seeing their stipends cut in half are set to expire in December.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered college campuses across America in spring 2020, that left tens of thousands of students worried they may not have their rent payments covered because their classes were forced online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between half of a housing stipend and the full payout can range from a few hundred dollars to nearly $2,000, since the payouts depend on the location of the student and school. Making up that difference could force some individuals move out mid-semester or drop course entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid those types of financial problems, Congress granted VA leaders broad authority to continue paying out the full housing stipends even if students had been forced out of the classroom. That authority was set to expire on Dec. 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Senate on Wednesday finalized legislation to push that date back to summer 2022, in recognition of the ongoing transition from online to in-person classes. The measure, sponsored by Rep. David Trone, D-Md., passed the House without objection on Dec. 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we\u2019ve made a lot of progress in getting this virus under control, many veterans continue to take classes online due to the pandemic and need the protections in this legislation in order to continue their studies,\u201d said Rep. Mike Levin, D-Calif. and chairman of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee\u2019s panel on economic opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt a time when we are trying to keep veterans housed and encourage them to pursue a higher education, the last thing we can afford is to let these protections expire and risk derailing their studies or, even worse, forcing them out of their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester, D-Mont., echoed that sentiment after the Senate\u2019s passage of the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo veteran should ever have to face uncertainty when it comes to their future,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/08\/20\/more-than-47000-troops-vets-will-see-federal-student-loan-fees-waived\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4009400.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More than 47,000 troops, vets will see federal student loan fees waived<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Department of Education officials will automatically grant financial relief to individuals who previously had to apply for the benefit.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure was not seen as controversial in either chamber but took months to finalize amid other legislative priorities, frustrating advocates who warned that student veterans were facing significant financial stress as a result of the inaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In California alone, more than 15,000 students are still receiving full stipend payouts even though they have not fully resumed in-person classes. In some cases, the decision to remain remote lies with individuals and schools. In others, state and local regulations limit class attendance and availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Joe Biden is expected to sign the measure into law in coming
