Overall veteran unemployment sits at historically low levels. Former military members as \u201chighly valued for soft skills\u201d and leadership experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authors Jason Dempsey and Amy Schafer also said that some of that civilian sector goodwill towards veterans could be leading to problems with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/10\/27\/should-companies-look-to-future-skills-instead-of-just-resumes-when-hiring-veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\">veteran dissatisfaction and underemployment<\/a>, directing newly separated troops into less-than-ideal jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/01\/10\/veterans-end-2019-with-another-positive-job-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5574870.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans end 2019 with another positive job report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Joblessness fell from November to December, wrapping up a year of generally good employment news for veterans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrently, it is nearly impossible for veterans in transition to understand the full breadth of options available to them and which will best help them achieve their goals,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile the numerous efforts largely include thoughtful programming, there remains a lack of clear pathways from military service to particular jobs. There is no comprehensive roadmap as to which credential, academic degree, or job placement program would best help a veteran reach a particular career goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many military transition efforts focus on matching skills that veterans learned in service with comparable civilian jobs. The report authors note that while that can produce a path to immediate employment for some, \u201cdirect translation of military skill sets to civilian occupations is rare\u201d and additional training is a necessity for long-term success in establishing a new career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans can be assets to companies, but may need to be viewed as investments over time as opposed to having immediate impact due to the need to acclimatize to civilian workplaces and learn new skills,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe task of translating veteran skill sets must go beyond MOS-translators to the next step of designing tailored pathways for individuals that make those skill sets relevant to specific occupational roles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report notes that federal efforts on the issue of veterans employment have largely focused on revamping the Transition Assistance Program to better prepare individuals for the civilian job sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a employed and connected but battling health woes after discharge<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A new survey shows that veterans fare well in their first year after the military but have a high &quot;health burden.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the authors argue that state and community leaders, instead of launching new programs to attract and retain veterans, would be more effective if they worked together to \u201cform a stronger national network of services that cover the entire life-cycle of veterans in transition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could include more training programs and transition assistance but also a way to \u201cconsolidate free tools and online resources to educate veterans on the challenges of transition and to make more informed choices about how they spend their time and money when deciding on
