{"id":66848,"date":"2018-01-22T19:11:18","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T19:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/01\/22\/pentagon-denies-isis-claim-of-killing-us-soldier\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:42:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:42:52","slug":"pentagon-denies-isis-claim-of-killing-us-soldier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/22\/pentagon-denies-isis-claim-of-killing-us-soldier\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon denies ISIS claim of killing U.S. soldier"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon shot down a claim by the Islamic State that it killed a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-A\u2019maq, a news agency for the insurgent force, claimed ISIS fighters killed an American and wounded seven Afghan soldiers in a battle in the Deh Bala area of Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, according to translations done by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can confirm there were no United States Forces-Afghanistan service members killed in Nangarhar in the last 24 hours,\u201d Capt. Tom Gresback, director of public affairs for Resolute Support, told Military Times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the Afghans defeat the enemy in Nangarhar, we continue to receive daily reports from the insurgents of their successes. Those claims are false,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Islamic State offshoot, known as ISIS-Khorasan, or ISIS-K, claimed in their news release that a joint attack by Afghan and U.S. forces on the villages of Jaharwazi and Mariz was repelled by insurgents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe clashes resulted in the death of a Crusader soldier and the wounding of seven apostates. The rest fled and managed to survive,\u201d ISIS-K alleged in its statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resolute Support did not collaborate that sequence of events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose types of notifications happen very quickly,\u201d a Pentagon spokesman said in reference to any alerts concerning casualties. \u201cBut we have not heard anything of a U.S. soldier being killed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, \u201cthe Deh Bala and Achin districts of Nangarhar continue to be a very active combat environment as the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces drive [ISIS-K] and the Taliban from their fighting positions,\u201d Gresback said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nangarhar is one of the deadliest provinces in Afghanistan. There, U.S. special operations forces are known to conduct dismounted operations and airstrikes against both Taliban and ISIS-K insurgents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last death in the province was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/03\/dod-identifies-green-beret-killed-in-new-years-day-attack-in-afghanistan\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">Sgt. 1st Class Mihail Golin<\/a>, a Green Beret from 10th Special Forces Group, who was killed in a firefight during a foot patrol on New Years Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The uptick in violence has been attributed to a shift in U.S. policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, the Trump administration loosened the reigns on U.S. forces in the region, giving them a wider berth to attack insurgents downrange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Jan. 17 that the new strategy is working. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are seeing that we are closer to talks with the Taliban and the peace process than we\u2019ve seen before,\u201d Haley told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/17\/us-ambassador-nikki-haley-says-trump-policy-in-afghanistan-is-working\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">the Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cI think we really are going to work toward a peace process with the goal being that we do not want Afghanistan to be a safe haven for terrorism
