{"id":67074,"date":"2020-04-29T17:35:57","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T17:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/04\/29\/slowed-increase-of-dod-coronavirus-cases-hints-at-a-flattened-curve\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:37:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:37:24","slug":"slowed-increase-of-dod-coronavirus-cases-hints-at-a-flattened-curve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/04\/29\/slowed-increase-of-dod-coronavirus-cases-hints-at-a-flattened-curve\/","title":{"rendered":"Slowed increase of DoD coronavirus cases hints at a flattened curve"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/\/TRca_qMXmsU' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2020\/04\/27\/pentagon-releases-videos-of-encounters-between-ufos-and-navy-pilots\/\" target=_blank>Defense Department<\/a>\u2019s rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/04\/27\/more-than-4000-troops-have-been-diagnosed-with-covid-19\/\" target=_blank>new COVID-19 cases<\/a> has slowed to its lowest pace since the beginning of the month, as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/04\/28\/dozens-test-positive-for-covid-19-at-san-diego-boot-camp\/\" target=_blank> diagnoses<\/a> in non-service members began to diminish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest data shows that 106 people tested positive on Tuesday, following 80 on Monday, down from a mid-April high that saw more than 300 new cases on some days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More specifically, new cases this week have been concentrated with troops, as the Pentagon rolls out a plan to test asymptomatic service members in key units, while new diagnoses in the three other categories DoD tracks have slowed to a trickle.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/04\/22\/this-is-the-plan-to-get-all-service-members-tested-for-covid-19\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/kitA.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This is the plan to get all service members tested for COVID-19<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More testing will role out in phases, with four tiers of priority.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fourteen civilians have been diagnosed in the past two days, down from 128 new cases reported in the same period last week. Overall, 91 have been hospitalized and 375 have recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the same period, 21 dependents have been diagnosed versus 69 from Monday to Wednesday last week, for a total of 871. The number of hospitalized dependents, 33, has held steady since April 23, with 298 recoveries so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And just five contractors have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since Monday, bringing the total to 428, versus 62 in the same period last week. Of those 61 have been hospitalized and 143 have recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though there have been fewer cases in those three groups than in the military, they have represented the overwhelming majority of DoD\u2019s COVID-19 deaths \u2015 25 total, or 93 percent. The department\u2019s overall mortality rate stands at 0.4 percent, compared with more than 5 percent nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast majority of DoD\u2019s positive coronavirus tests have come from troops this week, 159 so far, as the Pentagon moves on a plan to universally test certain units for COVID-19, regardless of symptoms, then ramp up to 100 percent testing throughout the force, and repeated testing before certain training, deployments and other travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, certain counter-terrorism units, nuclear deterrent forces and all new basic trainees are getting tested, in addition to those who are symptomatic and medical staff working with COVID-19 patients around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/04\/28\/coronavirus-cases-aboard-2nd-navy-ship-still-rising-now-64\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20119633314305.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coronavirus cases aboard 2nd Navy ship still rising, now 64<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number of coronavirus cases aboard the guided-missile destroyer Kidd rose to 64 as the Navy destroyer pulled into port at San Diego on Tuesday to get medical care for the crew and to disinfect and decontaminate the ship.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Wednesday, 4,359 service members had tested positive, up 94 cases \u2015 or 2 percent \u2015 from Tuesday. That brings the infection rate to 2,705-per-million, or nearing 0.3 percent, compared with the overall U.S. rate of 3,000-per-million, or 0.3 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With two documented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/2020\/04\/27\/20-percent-of-theodore-roosevelt-crew-test-positive-for-covid-19\/\" target=_blank>outbreaks aboard deployed ships<\/a>, the Navy continues to have the majority of confirmed cases: 1,723 as of Wednesday 73 percent more than the Army\u2019s 998 cases.
