releases new guidance for COVID-19 testing and treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon released two separate sets of guidelines Wednesday in an effort to keep up with a medical landscape that continues to evolve as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first set of guidelines, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/static.militarytimes.com\/assets\/pdfs\/1586377070.pdf\" target=_blank>Force Health Protection Guidance (Supplement 5)<\/a>,\u201d contain Defense Department instructions for moving and treating patients infected with COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving patients in military aircraft, for example, is not recommended due to \u201cairflow limitations\u201d common in DoD planes, the document said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guidance on how to handle potentially exposed patients, as well as personnel displaying moderate symptoms, is also included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread globally and as a result, medical treatment recommendations are rapidly changed,\u201d the document states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/static.militarytimes.com\/assets\/pdfs\/1586377070.pdf\" target=_blank>Supplement 5<\/a> discusses an array of additional topics, including patient placement, infection control, and ventilation use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/static.militarytimes.com\/assets\/pdfs\/1586377070.pdf\" target=_blank>Read the full text of Supplement 5 here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second document distributed Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/static.militarytimes.com\/assets\/pdfs\/1586377050.pdf\" target=_blank>Supplement 6<\/a>, provides an update to DoD laboratory testing procedures that must to be followed in accordance with guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEffective immediately, DoD Components will comply with this guidance to protect at-risk populations, maximize critical testing capability, and enable optimal public health decision-making,\u201d the Supplement 6 document states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One topic of note in <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/static.militarytimes.com\/assets\/pdfs\/1586377050.pdf\" target=_blank>Supplement 6<\/a> is the eligibility criteria that must be met in order for patients to be recommended to receive a COVID-19 test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision of whether to test \u201csymptomatic, mission essential individuals or those in high risk settings,\u201d for example, will be made at the individual command level, the document said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also included are instructions on returning to duty following a test and isolation period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a
