{"id":67764,"date":"2021-01-05T21:01:58","date_gmt":"2021-01-05T21:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/01\/05\/effort-underway-to-identify-unknown-world-war-ii-troops-who-were-buried-in-the-philippines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:55:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:55:43","slug":"effort-underway-to-identify-unknown-world-war-ii-troops-who-were-buried-in-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/01\/05\/effort-underway-to-identify-unknown-world-war-ii-troops-who-were-buried-in-the-philippines\/","title":{"rendered":"Effort underway to identify \u2018unknown\u2019 World War II troops who were buried in the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HONOLULU \u2014 The remains of some U.S. military personnel who died during World War II and were buried anonymously in the Philippines have been returned to Hawaii to try to determine their identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/\" target=_blank>Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency<\/a> recently conducted an \u201chonorable carry\u201d ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for about 40 sets of unidentified remains, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/2021\/01\/04\/hawaii-news\/gis-buried-as-unknowns-in-philippines-returned-to-state-for-identification\/?HSA=4995d5fe76b00373799d858d79b957c324759f1d\" target=_blank>Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/a> reported  Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repatriation from the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial was one of the agency\u2019s large disinterment projects, and the remains will be examined at a lab at Hickam for possible identification by forensic anthropologists and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/09\/19\/progress-on-recovering-missing-troops-but-still-a-daunting-task-ahead\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5522282.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Progress on recovering missing troops, but still a daunting task ahead<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials from the Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency identified more than 200 missing service members this fiscal year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency, which has an annual budget of $169 million and hundreds of personnel in Hawaii, investigates, recovers and identifies missing Americans from past wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency said it made 120 identifications in the fiscal year ending in September, with 82 from WWII, 36 from the Korean War and two from the Vietnam War. Cread Shuey of Norton, Kansas, who died in September 1942.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shuey and others were reburied several times amid attempts to identify the service members, but commingling of remains and limited identification technology hampered the efforts.
